About this file

This document is a set of construction design plans for the Blanchard Springs Caverns Tunnel Rehabilitation project located in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, Sylamore Ranger District, in Arkansas. The plans were prepared by Golder Associates and issued for bid, detailing the rehabilitation of existing cave entrances and the construction of a bypass tunnel system. The project encompasses multiple components including the Dripstone Cave entrance outer and inner airlock doors, Dripstone Cave exit outer and inner airlock doors, Dripstone Cave exit security doors, Discovery Cave exit outer and inner airlock doors, Discovery Cave exit security doors, a Dripstone Cave bypass tunnel with associated plan and section views, and a sinkhole infill detail. The plans include 15 sheets covering detailed architectural and structural designs for rockbolts, shotcrete shell details, door specifications and installation, drainage systems, utility placements, and construction sequencing.

The rehabilitation work involves installing new security and airlock door systems at multiple cave entrances, constructing a bypass tunnel around the Dripstone Cave to protect sensitive formations, implementing comprehensive ground support measures including rockbolts and shotcrete reinforcement, and managing surface water through stormwater diversion berms and sinkhole infilling. Key specifications include 6-foot-long fully resin-grouted threaded rebar rockbolts on maximum 4-foot centers at entrance and exit areas, standard aluminum framed full-view balanced doors with stainless steel hardware, fiber-reinforced plastic reinforced shotcrete shells, and concrete curbs for door installations. The design incorporates geotechnical monitoring provisions including crack gauges and mechanical telltales to track structural movement during and after construction.
