About this file

This is a Project Manual and technical specifications document for the USDA Forest Service Blanchard Springs Caverns Handrail and Lighting Replacement project located in Fifty-Six, Arkansas. The document contains detailed specifications for the procurement, fabrication, and installation of aluminum pipe and tube railings, electrical power conductors and cables, grounding and bonding systems, electrical equipment supports, conduits, boxes, and covers required for this cavern infrastructure improvement project.

The project involves replacement of handrails and lighting systems within the caverns, managed under Task Order 12445221D0017/12445123F0023. Key specifications include aluminum railings fabricated from alloy 6063-T5/T52 extruded bars and tubing to ASTM standards with clear anodic finish, designed to withstand 50 lbf/ft uniform loads and 200 lbf concentrated loads. Electrical work requires copper building wire (Type XHHW-2) and metal-clad cable (Type MC) with aluminum interlocked armor and PVC jacket, installed using nonmetallic outlet boxes, PVC Schedule 40 and 80 rigid conduit, and appropriate grounding and bonding systems with maximum ground resistance of 25 ohms. All electrical components must be listed and labeled per NFPA 70 standards. Installation requirements emphasize protection of cavern surfaces using only natural materials available on-site, with cables concealed or hidden using rock debris rather than brought-in materials. The document specifies multiple manufacturer options for major components, requires shop assembly to minimize field splicing, mandates comprehensive testing and inspection protocols for electrical systems, and establishes strict quality control standards for both structural and electrical installations prior to substantial completion.
