Transformer Vacuum Criteria – David Deines

Max. Allowable Initial Vacuum for a New Unit

Max. Allowable Initial Vacuum for an In-Service Unit

Maximum Allowable 30 Minute

Temp. °C (0.7% M.I.P.) (1.0% M.I.P.) Difference 10 0.042 mm 0.080 mm 0.038 mm 15 0.068 mm 0.130 mm 0.062 mm 20 0.105 mm 0.200 mm 0.095 mm 25 0.140 mm 0.290 mm 0.150 mm 30 0.225 mm 0.410 mm 0.185 mm 35 0.340 mm 0.620 mm 0.280 mm 40 0.500 mm 0.880 mm 0.380 mm

Expect in the beginning the difference over 30 minutes will be large, as much as 0.2 mm or so. It is common practice to discard or ignore readings for the first five (5) minutes. This is caused by the moisture in the paper displacing the pressure. Each time you measure the 30 minute difference, the value should decrease until the vacuum stabilizes. When the vacuum has stabilized with no significant change for a 30 minute interval most moisture has been drawn out of the cellulous. This will not remove all moisture from the unit. Additional practices can be used to further dry the unit, but there are allowable levels of moisture in the insulating fluids provided in guides like IEEE C57.106 and C57.152.

Once an acceptable stabilized vacuum has been achieved and the valves are close it is expected the vacuum will relax quickly and stabilize if there is no leak in the system. If the unit has a leak, a vacuum cannot be maintained to the levels in the table and during the 30 minute difference tests the vacuum will increase 1-2 mm or more. This can occur after an apparent vacuum has been achieved, requiring additional observation once the process has stopped and the unit is closed off and stabilized.

Before final vacuum pull on the unit a leak rate test should be performed as follows:

1. Coordinate with Owner to blank off any devices that may not withstand vacuum pressures.

2. Pull vacuum to 2 mm for 30 minutes. Avoid going much below 2 mm as this will affect the measurements.

3. Close off the valve with the vacuum connection on the tank.

4. Wait five (5) minutes and take a vacuum reading.

5. Wait another ten (10) minutes and take another vacuum reading.

6. The difference (first reading less the second) should be compared to the following:

Gallons Difference Gallons Difference ≤ 5000 0.66 mm ≤ 12000 0.66 mm ≤ 6000 0.57 mm ≤ 14000 0.57 mm ≤ 7000 0.50 mm ≤ 16000 0.50 mm ≤ 8000 0.45 mm ≤ 18000 0.45 mm ≤ 9000 0.36 mm ≤ 20000 0.19 mm ≤ 10000 0.30 mm 22200 + 0.18 mm

7. If the difference is lower than the table, then proceed with final vacuum. If not, repair leak.

This procedure has been edited for clarity by Jerry Murphy 28 October 2020.
