Radiation Shielding Evaluation
Existing CT Suite
Blackfeet Community Hospital
Browning, MT
These recommendations are based on the following:
1. IHS and State of Montana current radiation regulations and attached drawings.
2. The following shielding calculations and specifications are derived on the basis of the recommendations of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements as contained in NCRP Report No. 147 Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-Ray Imaging
Facilities and the stated workloads and conditions. Also, where appropriate, alternative methods of calculation that reflect the continuing evolution of equipment, techniques, and available data were used as a supplement to NCRP 147.
3. Where specific information regarding the workload for the proposed facility was unavailable, the typical workloads for busy installations as provided in NCRP 147, supplemented and updated, were used as a guide.
4. The recommended lead in all barriers should extend 7 feet from the floor.
5. Any voids in the lead barriers for conduit, AC, plumbing or others, should have lead backing equivalent to their respective barrier.
The existing CT room was evaluated for the current, in place, radiation shielding.
All of the walls, including the double doors to the hallway, have adequate radiation shielding for the installation of a new CT scanner system.
The control room wall and the observation window in that wall are sufficient for a new CT scanner installation.
The rear wall or the current control area (South Wall) Barrier A-B on the attached drawing, have sufficient shielding for a new CT scanner installation.
The hallway wall (East Wall), Barrier B-C on the attached drawing, has sufficient shielding for a new CT scanner installation. The door in Barrier B-C is sufficient for a new scanner.
The (West Wall), Barrier G-A on the attached drawing, has sufficient shielding for a new CT scanner installation.
Below are the barrier requirement for the new CT scanner installation
BARRIER ADDITIONAL SHIELDING RECOMMENDED
A-B No additional shielding required
B-C No additional shielding required
Door in Barrier B-C 1/16 in lead equivalent
Any replaced sections in B-C 1/16 inch lead
D-E 1/16 in lead
Observation window in D-E 1/16 in lead equivalent
E-F No shielding required
F-G No shielding required
G-A No additional shielding required
Floor No additional shielding
Ceiling No additional shielding
