2.1 MATERIALS
Materials shall conform to the following requirements.
2.1.1 Ballistic Rubber General Requirements
All proposed Material Product, Instructions, Warranty and Maintenance Data for the ballistic rubber material must comply with the following general criteria:
1. Ballistic material shall be a non-ricochet, non-splatter, round defeating, bullet encapsulating ballistic rubber.
2. Ballistic material must have been formally tested by an approved agency or facility for penetration and ricochet values.
3. Ballistic material used must have a history of a minimum of 10 successful installations.
4. Ballistic material shall have self-healing properties up to round saturation guidelines.
5. Ballistic rubber material must be a cold pressed product with a maximum density of 48 lbs. per cubic foot.
6. Ballistic materials must accept a latex base acrylic paint finish on their surface if required.
7. No Vulcanized or heat treated rubber will be acceptable for this application.
8. Ballistic materials, if required to meet fire resistant criteria, must have passed the Underwriters Laboratories UL 94 Horizontal Flammability Test.
9. Ballistic material must be usable in both protected and unprotected environments and provide for UV protection if used unprotected.
10. Ballistic materials must be modular, dimensionally stable, recyclable and replaceable by end user maintenance personnel.
11. Ballistic materials shall have no air or sand/rock filled gaps as part of the bullet capturing system. Surface material must be bonded directly to steel panel substrate.
12. Ballistic materials shall have a minimum of a one-year warranty on manufacturing defects.
2.1.2 Surface Product Composition
Product Data of the ballistic rubber materials shall be a mixture of modified, high density composite rubber based particles, Kevlar and titanium particles, and bonding agents, molded under high pressure to form
SECTION 10 48 60 Page 2 dimensionally stable ballistic panels and blocks. Ballistic rubber material is to be free of large cracks, tears, holes or any defects which will impair performance. all ballistic rubber material will be free of metal debris. Minor cracks and chipping as a result of manufacture, shipping and handling are normal and are not considered grounds for rejection.
Weight and/or Density of ballistic rubber material shall be a maximum 48 pounds per cubic foot.
Dimensional Tolerance: 1/4" length and width, 1/4" depth.
2.1.3 Round Defeating Substrate
Refer to Structural Steel Section 05 12 00 for AR 500 steel plate substrate requirements.
