About this file
The document is a Base Kodiak Restoration Mapbook created by the United States Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit in Juneau, Alaska in May 2022. It provides a comprehensive environmental assessment of multiple contaminated sites across the Kodiak Base, detailing the status, contaminants, and remediation efforts for 70 different locations. The sites include former landfills, fuel storage areas, underground storage tanks, drum disposal areas, and various buildings with environmental concerns, ranging from petroleum hydrocarbons and metals to PCBs and volatile organic compounds.
The mapbook categorizes sites by their current status (Active, Cleanup Complete, Cleanup Complete with Institutional Controls) and includes detailed information about minimum depth to groundwater, specific contaminants of concern, and required remedial controls. Many sites have ongoing monitoring, land use restrictions, and specific guidelines for future excavation or site work. The document covers areas such as the Coast Guard Landfill, Navy Landfill, various fuel farms, barrel storage areas, and sites at locations like Buskin Lake, Spruce Cape, and Narrow Cape. The comprehensive report serves as an environmental management tool for tracking and addressing contamination across the U.S. Coast Guard's Kodiak Base facilities.

Remedial Controls Remedial Actions:
Annual (October) post-closure monitoring LUCs:
(1) The asphalt cap over the contaminated area will remain in place and is inspected at least annually to ensure that it is in good condition.
(2) Any intrusive activity at this site will require review and approval by Base Kodiak Environmental Division, on behalf of the Facilities Engineer, and appropriate measures taken for the type of intrusive activity. Dig permit issuance will require notification of the contractor that petroleum and chlorinated solvent compounds may be present and appropriate worker health and safety measures must be taken.
(3) Any soils removed for utility or other work must be tested for the presence of petroleum and VOCs prior to offsite disposal. If soils do not contain chlorinated solvent compounds, they may be able to be replaced in the excavation.
