About this file
This document is a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Suicide Risk Identification Strategy Staff Specific Guidance document dated December 13, 2022. It details the requirements for staff to complete the Columbia - Suicide Severity Rating Scale Screener (C-SSRS Screener) and Comprehensive Suicide Risk Evaluation (CSRE). The guidance provides a detailed matrix specifying which healthcare professionals can complete each type of assessment, with varying permissions across different roles.
The document outlines that a Comprehensive Suicide Risk Evaluation (CSRE), which contains a detailed assessment and disposition, must be completed by a VHA Health Care Provider who is a licensed independent provider (LIP) or advanced practice provider. The matrix shows that medical doctors, licensed psychologists, clinical pharmacist practitioners, social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and some other healthcare professionals can complete the C-SSRS Screener. However, only select professionals can complete the more comprehensive CSRE. The document includes footnotes clarifying that trainees can complete assessments under supervision, and facilities must ensure adequate training in administering these assessments.
