About this file

This is a field methodology document for forb frequency data collection as part of the Sage Grouse Habitat Assessment Framework (TR 6710-1). The document outlines standardized procedures for AIM (Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring) crews to collect forb species data at the site scale (Fourth Order) to supplement existing AIM datasets.

The methodology requires crews to conduct systematic surveys every 2 meters along 25-meter transects, recording the presence of any forb species rooted within a 1-meter radius, 180-degree arc at each measurement point. Data collection includes both annual and perennial forbs, whether dead or alive, with presence marked on datasheets using an "X" at appropriate meter marks. The protocol specifies 12 measurements per transect starting at the 2-meter mark (not at 0 as shown in the HAF manual), totaling 36 measurements per plot across three transects. Sweeps are conducted from left to right at even-numbered meter marks (2m, 4m, 6m, 8m, etc.), and crews must include a "dead beyond recognition" code for unidentifiable dead forbs found within sweep boundaries.

Forb Frequency Field Methods for AIM Crews

As described in Appendix B of the “Sage Grouse Habitat Assessment Framework” (TR 6710-1)

Overview:

The HAF evaluates the landscape at 4 scales:

• Broad Scale (First Order)

• Mid Scale (Second Order)

• Fine Scale (Third Order)

• Site Scale (Fourth Order)

We are collecting information on forbs at the ‘Site Scale’ or Fourth Order that will supplement AIM data.

Methods:

• Every 2 meters, record the presence of any forbs, by species, which are rooted within a 1-meter radius, 180-degree arc centering on the respective meter mark.

• Presence is denoted by an X on the datasheet at the appropriate meter mark for the transect.

• All annual and perennial forbs, dead or alive, are to be recorded during Forb Diversity.

• If a dead beyond recognition forb is present within the sweep boundary, include the dead beyond recognition code in your species list and denote presence as normal.

• A total of 12 measures per tape, 36 measures per plot, will be taken.

NOTE—start at meter 2, NOT at 0 as shown in the HAF manual

Sweep Locations:

As our transects are 25 meters long, we do 12 measures per transect, 36 total per plot, starting at the 2-meter mark. Sweeps are made from left to right with the pole held at every even meter mark (red X below) down the transect (2m, 4m, 6, 8m, etc.)
