About this file

This is a supplemental specifications document for the Birch Creek CCC Camp Roofing Replacement project on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The work involves removing and replacing existing SBS modified bitumen rolled roofing on six buildings: Block Hall, Birch Creek Lodge, Lodgepole Cabin, Emerich Hall, Recreation Hall, and the Captain's Quarters. The scope includes demolition of existing roofs, installation of new roof sheathing, underlayment materials, SBS modified bitumen membrane roofing system, weather proofing, water barriers, trim, flashing, and drip edge. All work must comply with manufacturer specifications and federal OSHA requirements, with temporary protection maintained to prevent wildlife entry and protect building occupants during construction.

The specifications detail material requirements including MuleHide SBS-modified bituminous membrane roofing system (base sheets, interply sheets, and granule-surfaced cap sheets), wood framing and sheathing materials complying with DOC standards, galvanized or stainless steel fasteners, and metal flashing with minimum dimensions of 4" x 4" x 7 5/8". Installation must follow FM Approvals RoofNav listed roof assembly requirements and manufacturer instructions, with base sheets mechanically fastened using minimum 3-inch side laps and 12-inch end laps, and cap sheets applied with 20-pound roller pressure. The contractor is responsible for all demolition debris removal and disposal at an approved facility, field dimension verification before material ordering, and providing a 10-year product guarantee from the roofing manufacturer. All submittals require contractor approval 10 calendar days in advance, and substitutions of specified materials must be requested at least 10 days before installation with full technical documentation and compliance statements.

INSTALLATION OF SBS-MODIFIED BITUMINOUS CAP SHEET

Before installing, unroll cap sheet, cut into workable lengths, and allow to lie flat for a time period recommended by manufacturer for the ambient temperature at which cap sheet will be installed.

Install modified bituminous roofing cap sheet according to roofing manufacturer's written instructions, starting at low point of roofing system.

Extend cap sheet over and terminate above cants.

Install cap sheet without wrinkles or tears, and free from air pockets.

Install cap sheet so side and end laps shed water.

Laps: Accurately align roofing sheets, without stretching, and maintain uniform side and end laps.

Lap side laps as recommended by roof membrane manufacturer but not less than 3 inches (76 mm).

Lap end laps as recommended by roof membrane manufacturer but not less than 12 inches (300 mm).

Stagger end laps not less than 18 inches (450 mm).

Repair tears and voids in laps and lapped seams not completely sealed.

Apply pressure to the body of the cap sheet according to manufacturer's instructions, to remove air pockets and to result in complete adhesion of base sheet to substrate.

Apply roofing granules of same color as roof membrane to cover exuded bead at laps while bead is hot, to provide a continuous color appearance.

INSTALLATION OF FLASHING AND STRIPPING

Install base flashing over cant strips and other sloped and vertical surfaces, at roof edges, and at penetrations through roof, and secure to substrates according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions and as follows:

Prime substrates with asphalt primer if required by roofing system manufacturer.

Extend base flashing up walls or parapets a minimum of 8 inches (200 mm) above roofing membrane and 4 inches (100 mm) onto field of roofing membrane.

Mechanically fasten top of base flashing securely at terminations and perimeter of roofing.

Install roofing cap-sheet stripping where metal flanges and edgings are set on roofing according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Repair or remove and replace components of roofing system where inspections indicate that they do not comply with specified requirements.

Roofing system will be considered defective if it does not pass inspections.

Additional testing and inspecting, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with specified requirements.

PROTECTING AND CLEANING

Protect roofing system from damage and wear during remainder of construction period.

When remaining construction does not affect or endanger roofing, inspect roofing system for deterioration and damage, describing its nature and extent in a written report, with copies to CO.

Correct deficiencies in or remove roofing system that does not comply with requirements, repair substrates, and repair or reinstall roofing system to a condition free of damage and deterioration at time of Substantial Completion and according to warranty requirements.

Clean overspray and spillage from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction.
