About this file
This document is a routine bridge inspection report for the AAC & Senator Wash Road Bridge, located in Imperial County, California, prepared by the Bureau of Reclamation's Lower Colorado Region Yuma Area Office. The inspection was conducted on 4/2/2024 by Dustin Johnson and Frank Macaluso, with Victor Auparero in attendance, during clear and calm weather with a temperature of 55°F.
The 272.9-foot-long, three-span steel bridge carries Senator Wash Road over the All-American Canal and provides access to Senator Wash Dam, Senator Wash Reservoir, and Xanyo Xamshire (formerly Squaw Lake). The structural evaluation indicates the bridge is in satisfactory condition, with minor issues including deck cracking, worn steel girder coating, and deteriorated rip rap protection at the abutments. Specific recommendations include repairing the canal bank and rip rap protection to prevent potential foundation undermining. The load rating is currently being reviewed, with a load rating scheduled for fiscal year 2025, and no critical findings were identified during this inspection.

Bridge Description
The bridge is in Imperial County, California approximately one mile downstream of Imperial Dam. The bridge carries Senator Wash Road over the All-American Canal and provides access to Senator Wash Dam, Senator Wash Reservoir, and Xanyo Xamshire (formerly Squaw Lake).
The bridge is a 272.9-foot-long, three-span, steel structure with a reinforced concrete deck. The deck is 7.75 inches thick and 38 feet wide. The curb-to-curb width is 32.5 feet. Concrete curbs run along both side of the bridge. A 4-foot-wide sidewalk is located on the south (downstream) side. The bridge railing consists of two steel horizontal rails supported by steel posts bolted to the deck.
The superstructure consists of four continuous steel W36x230 girders with MC18x42.7 diaphragms. The structure is intermediately supported by two pile bents. Each bent consists of 12 precast, prestressed concrete piles and a reinforced concrete pile cap. The abutments are shallow foundations supported on the canal banks.

If a Critical Finding was identified, what is the required Plan of Action to correct the issue?
NA
Structural Evaluation Summary
The bridge is in satisfactory condition. Minor cracking was present on the bridge deck and appears unchanged from past years. The coating on the steel girders is worn and has localized failure and pinholes. The rip rap protection at the abutment has deteriorated. Erosion on the east abutment continues to progress. Repair of the canal bank and rip rap protection should be performed to prevent future undermining of the bridge foundation.
Recommendations and Estimated Costs Definitions Category 1 Recommendations involving the correction of severe deficiencies where immediate responsive action is required to ensure structural safety and operational integrity of a facility.
Category 2 Recommendations covering a wide range of important matters where action is needed to prevent or reduce further damage or preclude possible operational failure of a facility.
Category 3 Recommendations covering less important matters but believed to be sound and beneficial suggestions to improve, or enhance, the O&M of a project or facility.

Additional Inspection Notes and Deficiencies
Field Inspection Report Condition Rating Codes for Items 58-62 N Not Applicable 3 Serious Condition – loss of section, deterioration, spalling, or scour have seriously affected primary structural components. Local failures are possible. Fatigue cracks in steel or shear cracks in concrete may be present
9 Excellent Condition 8 Very Good Condition – no problems noted.
7 Good Condition – some minor problems.
2 Critical Condition – advanced deterioration of primary structural elements. Fatigue cracks in steel or shear cracks in concrete may be present or scour may have removed substructure support. Unless closely monitored it may be necessary to close the bridge until corrective action is taken.
6 Satisfactory Condition – structural elements show some minor deterioration.
5 Fair Condition – all primary structural elements are sound, but may have minor section loss, cracking, spalling, or scour
1 “Imminent” Failure Condition – major deterioration or section loss present in critical structural components or obvious vertical or horizontal movement affecting structure stability. Bridge is closed to traffic, but corrective action may return structure to light service.
4 Poor Condition – advanced section loss, deterioration, spalling, or scour
0 Failed Condition – out of service; beyond corrective action.
