About this file
These are the supplemental specifications for the Herman Gulch Trailhead Toilet Installation project in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests. The documents outline comprehensive technical requirements for a toilet replacement project, covering multiple technical sections including general requirements, government-furnished materials, structure demolition, prefabricated building modules, clearing and grubbing, earthwork, temporary erosion control, barrier boulders, aggregate, and revegetation.
The project involves removing an existing damaged vault toilet, utilizing the existing excavation, and installing a new double vault toilet structure manufactured by CXT Incorporated. Specific requirements include precise site preparation, excavation, bedding, backfilling, grading, and revegetation of disturbed areas. The specifications detail technical standards for materials, installation methods, compaction, erosion control, and site restoration, with an emphasis on maintaining environmental integrity and following Forest Service guidelines. The work will be performed at the Herman Gulch Trailhead, located approximately 55 miles west of Denver, Colorado, at an elevation of around 10,400 feet.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
SECTION 010150
PART 1 – SUMMARY OF WORK
1.1 DESCRIPTION
A. The intent of this section is to provide a general outline of the work required under this contract and identify special project conditions and/or requirements. It is not intended to provide detailed specifications for materials, labor, and workmanship. These are covered in other sections of these specifications.
I. The Herman Gulch trailhead is a popular gateway for hikers, fishers, backpackers, and back country skiers. Located just east of Loveland pass (HWY 6), the trailhead is a minute off i- 70, providing easy access to trail systems on the Clear Creek Ranger District (CCRD) of the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland. Herman Gulch sees very heavy recreation use for both the winter and summer months, and it is not uncommon for the parking lot to fill up year-round. The vault toilets at the trailhead were hit and damaged by a snowplow. The building posed a safety hazard and was removed.
Currently, there are two portable toilets to accommodate the large volume of trailhead users. The old vaults and lids need to be properly disposed so the existing excavation can be used, and a new vault toilet can be installed.
