About this file

This document details the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) District 1 Lane Closure System (LCS), a web-based platform developed in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Department of Computer Science and involving multiple stakeholders including Delcan (a Parsons company). The system was initially developed starting in 2011, launched in July 2013, and has successfully processed 224,665 lane closure requests. Key personnel include representatives from IDOT's Bureau of Traffic, ITS Program Office, Office of Planning and Programming, Division of Highways, and Bureau of Information Processing, along with university and industry professionals.

The Lane Closure System is a comprehensive web-based platform that allows contractors and maintenance yards to register online, submit lane closure requests, and receive automated approvals or denials. The system provides robust features including validation of data entry, geocoded location tracking, conflict detection, automatic PDF report generation, and support for different access roles. It integrates with the GTIS database and can distribute reports to multiple stakeholders including agencies, researchers, and private companies. The system handles various closure types, validates allowed/disallowed hours by location and day of week, and supports both stationary and moving lane closures across different expressways and road segments. The platform aims to streamline lane closure management, improve communication, and enhance traffic planning efficiency.
