About this file

This document is a technical specification for salient characteristics required in interactive patient simulators for medical training applications. Version 1.0 was authored by Jesse Wagner on July 24, 2026.

The specification establishes five primary requirement categories. Physiological Realism requires high-fidelity simulation of human anatomy and live responses, including airway and respiratory management capabilities (bag-valve-mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy care, suctioning with bilateral chest rise and fall), real-time adjustable bilateral pulses with variable intensities, synchronized anatomically correct heart/lung/bowel sounds in normal and pathological states, and reactive pupils and eyelids responding to light or trauma. Clinical and Procedural Interactivity mandates compatibility with real ECG monitors and defibrillators to execute virtual pacing, cardioversion, and automated external defibrillator operations. Integrated Software and Controls require a dynamic vital signs display tracking heart rate, oxygen saturation, and multi-lead EKG traces including arrhythmias, companion facilitator control software operable via tablet or PC for scenario adjustment and performance logging, and bidirectional audio with microphones and speakers for patient communication simulation. Design Versatility and Durability specifications call for full articulation of major joints including cervical spine mobility for patient transfer and stabilization training, and wireless battery-powered capability enabling in situ training in ambulances, tactical environments, and clinical wards rather than dedicated simulation centers. Assessment, Debriefing, and Analytics requirements include time-stamped automated logging of student actions and interventions, and built-in grading rubrics or checklist engines to evaluate compliance with standard medical protocols.

Salient Characteristics for Interactive Patient Simulators

Author: Jesse Wagner Date: July 24, 2026 Version: 1.0

Salient Characteristics for Interactive Patient Simulators | v1.0

1. Physiological Realism (High Fidelity) The simulator must mimic human anatomy and live physiological responses realistically to allow for immersion and “trust-but-verify” medical assessment.

1.1 Airway & Respiratory Management

Ability to support bag-valve-mask (BVM) ventilation, endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy care, and suctioning, complete with bilateral chest rise and fall.

1.2 Cardiovascular Dynamics

Real-time adjustable, bilateral pulses (such as carotid, radial, and brachial) with variable intensities.

1.3 Auscultation Capabilities

Synchronized, anatomically correct heart, lung, and bowel sounds featuring both normal physiological states and abnormal pathological variations.

1.4 Neurological & Visual Signs

Reactive pupils and eyelids that respond to light or trauma scenarios.

2. Clinical and Procedural Interactivity The simulator must support invasive and non-invasive medical interventions using standard, real-world clinical equipment.

2.1 Defibrillation & Monitoring

Compatibility with real ECG monitors and defibrillators to execute virtual pacing, cardioversion, and automated external defibrillator (AED) operations.

3. Integrated Software & Controls A robust control interface is essential to drive scenarios dynamically based on the learner’s decisions.

3.1 Dynamic Vital Signs Display

A dedicated virtual monitor that tracks parameters like heart rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2), and multi-lead EKG traces (including arrhythmias like AFib, VFib, and Asystole).

3.2 Facilitator Control & Software

Companion software (often operated wirelessly via tablet or PC) that allows instructors to adjust states instantly, trigger pre-programmed scenarios, and record performance logs.

3.3 Bidirectional Audio

Microphones and speakers that allow the facilitator to speak as the patient, facilitating communication and patient-history gathering.

4. Design Versatility & Durability To cover a wide range of training objectives, physical simulators must be easily adaptable and physically rugged.

4.1 Anatomical Articulation

Full articulation of major joints (including cervical spine mobility) to simulate patient transfer, stabilization, and nursing care.

4.2 Physical Portability

Wireless, battery-powered capability allowing training to occur in situ (e.g., in the back of an ambulance, in tactical environments, or on the ward) rather than being limited to a dedicated simulation center.

5. Assessment, Debriefing, and Analytics The primary educational value comes from the post-simulation review, requiring robust data capture.

5.1 Automated Log Generation

Time-stamped tracking of student actions, interventions.

5.2 Performance Scoring

Built-in grading rubrics or checklist engines to evaluate compliance with standard medical protocols (if able).
