About this file
The document is an Archaeological Inadvertent Discovery Plan (IDP) for the South Slough Visitor Center Entrance Project, involving the Oregon Department of State Lands and the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The IDP provides detailed guidelines for contractors and workers involved in the Wasson Creek Watershed Restoration Project, specifically outlining procedures to follow if archaeological artifacts or human remains are encountered during ground-disturbing activities. The plan comprehensively describes potential archaeological finds, which may include stone tools, historic building materials, shell middens, structural remains, and human skeletal fragments, and mandates immediate work stoppage and notification protocols if such discoveries occur.
The document emphasizes strict confidentiality and legal protections for archaeological sites under federal and state laws, with potential criminal penalties for disturbance. The plan includes specific contact information for key personnel, including the Project Manager, Stewardship Coordinator, Agency Official, Oregon State Police, State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and several Native American tribes with potential cultural interests in the area. A detailed appendix provides visual reference guides with examples of archaeological artifacts, helping workers identify potential discoveries. The project is associated with the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and is located in Charleston, Oregon, with a project number of 2204-372 and planned for implementation in May 2025.
