Statement of Work for
Tailored Yoga Instruction Service
(August 17, 2023)
Background: Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL has a requirement to support its employees’ overall health and well-being.
SOCCENT is seeking tailored yoga instruction as a tool to support service member retention, combat stress and anxiety, facilitate injury prevention / augment recovery, and improve physical fitness, resiliency, and sleep hygiene.
Instructional scope: Professional yoga instruction to support approximately 20 participants per class. Flexibility and responsiveness to work with participants and/or with Command leadership to establish specific objectives for participants and tailor classes to particular injury profiles or prevention issues, comprehensive wellness goals, or other desired outcomes.
Management scope:
Conduct all required communications by phone, email, and/or in-person with U.S. Special
Operations Command (USSOCOM) Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF) Program Physical domain staff to coordinate yoga class timing and location in sync with other Human Performance Program (HPP) elements, other Command-driven events and functions that impact gym and pavilion usage, and all protocols related to COVID-19 at the Command and Installation levels as they emerge.
Prepare and deliver by email weekly situational reports (SITREPs) that detail all yoga classes and activities (e.g., attendance numbers and new student reach, functional focus, feedback received) to the POTFF Director.
Attend SOCCENT POTFF team sync meetings every other month to represent yoga equities and provide fully integrated responsiveness to the broader POTFF operating environments, Command priorities, and Operator needs.
Styles of Yoga Required:
Vinyasa “Flow”-style practice synchronizes breath with dynamic postural sequencing;
promotes cardiovascular strength and agility, concentration, and balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Yin Deep stretching practice uses longer holds in fewer postures to target fascia and connective tissues. Builds patience and endurance; important complement to service-required physical fitness testing (i.e., running, sit-ups, pushups) that focuses on muscular contraction without corollary of muscular extension.
Adaptive Modified approach makes yoga accessible, safe, and productive for all fitness levels, medical conditions, and mental/emotional states (e.g., PTSD, TBI). Can be conducted as “chair yoga” if injury profiles or space constraints apply.
Restorative Fully supported physical practice releases muscular engagement and stimulates parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s “rest and digest” functions;
promotes recovery from injury, stress, or strenuous activity, reduces anxiety, and improves sleep and mental focus.
Contract duration: 12 months with 4 extendable 12-month option periods. Start/end dates for this period of performance to be established at time of award.
Class date/time: Wednesdays, 1200-1300HRS (or other day/time, at Command’s request). 1-hour class includes tailored instruction and original content each week, with repetition if/as desired for working toward specific outcomes, and ability to address planned as well as spontaneous participant requests.
Wednesdays 0630 – 0730HRS (or other day/time, at Command’s request) 1-hour class includes tailored instruction and original content each week, with the repetition if/as desired for working toward specific outcomes, and ability to address planned as well as spontaneous participant requests.
Required Yoga Training & Experience:
