About this file

This document is a Representative Work Order (RWO) for a subcontract under a federal contract opportunity. The subcontract is for a structural and thermal analysis of the optical bench assembly for an orbiting spectrometer. The key tasks include modifying the structural finite element model (FEM) to support STOP (Structural Thermal Optical Performance) analysis and jitter analysis, mapping provided thermal predictions to the FEM, performing thermoelastic and jitter analyses, and delivering the final FEMs and analysis results.

The related federal contract opportunity is for Mechanical Systems Structural Analysis Support Services, issued as a small business set-aside solicitation by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Proposals are due by July 12, 2024, with past performance information due by June 26, 2024. The contract will be a cost-type subcontract. JPL is seeking a subcontractor to provide the required structural and thermal analysis services.

The subject hardware is the optical bench assembly of an orbiting spectrometer. The optical bench assembly consists of an optical bench enclosure which supports a spectrometer and a cryocooler.

A high-quality CDR-level structural/thermoelastic FEM (NASTRAN format) and maps of thermal predictions (nodes and temperatures) from Thermal Desktop will be provided by JPL to the subcontractor performing this work.

A. STOP (Structural Thermal Optical Performance) analysis task:

1. Modify the structural FEM to have appropriate nodes and elements on mirror surfaces M1, M2, and M3, and LoS (line of sight) pointing error MPC (multipoint constraint) equations, to support STOP analysis and boresight tracking.

2. Map provided temperatures (from a coarsely meshed model) to FEM.

3. Perform thermoelastic analysis. Export appropriate mirror surface deformations to support SigFit and optical analysis of performance parameter effects and boresight shift. SigFit and optical analysis will be performed by JPL.

B. Jitter analysis task:

1. Modify the structural FEM to have appropriate CBE (current best estimate) basic mass (mass properties will be provided by JPL), nodes and elements on mirror surfaces, and LoS pointing error MPC equations, to support jitter analysis.

2. For the provided cryocooler exported force vs. frequency input disturbances, compare M1, M2, and M3 mirror rigid body motions and deformations, in addition to LoS pointing errors, to provided jitter budgets. Export force/moment vs. frequency data (for random analysis PSD vs. frequency and RMS values) at the optical bench support points SC1 through SC4.

C. Deliverables from the subcontractor to JPL:

1. Provide final results in Powerpoint form

2. STOP and jitter FEMs

3. Raw results data and calculations (Excel file(s), .csv file(s), or .mat MATLAB file(s))

D. Work Status

1. Subcontractor will be required to support weekly status meetings (remote participation).
