PART 2 EXECUTION

2.01 PREPARATION

A. Reconditioning the roadbed –

Blading and shaping operations shall scarify the roadbed as required to remove, ruts, potholes, corrugations, and berms. The roadbed shall be scarified no more than 6 inches. All suitable dislodged aggregate shall be smoothly redistributed over the entire traveled way to produce proper cross slope or crown (l/4" to l/2" per foot) as shown in the Drawings.

All suitable aggregate which has been worked onto road shoulder by traffic or maintenance activities shall be reclaimed onto the traveled way. Grass or leaf litter disturbed within the traveled way shall be smoothly spread within the traveled way or along the shoulder after

CIM-0803-07F/Rec_Mtce 34 3400 - 1 TRANSPORTATION movement sufficient to sift out surface aggregate.

Assure proper surface drainage following this operation. No undercutting of road surface at shoulder line nor material berms will be allowed unless designated by the COR.

Loose rocks protruding three (3) inches or more above graded surface shall be removed from the traveled way. It is permissible to waste these rocks over the road shoulder edge away from drainage ditches.

All traveled way widths (aggregate surface) shall be perpetuated as existing. Dips and swales within the traveled way designed to control surface drainage shall be maintained.

Compact using the following method:

(a) Compaction A. Operate equipment over the full width.

B. Clean and reshape ditches –

All ditches shall be maintained in their original location to the shape and grade required to insure drainage of the roadway. Drainage structures and road appurtenances shall not be damaged during this operation. Handwork required to properly connect ditch flow lines to drainage structure inlets is considered a part of this activity.

Road Ditches. All suitable material (having the same character as the road surface) excavated through this activity shall be reclaimed and used within the traveled way. Unsuitable material shall be spread along road shoulders or fill slopes to assure road surface drainage and preventing unsuitable material being pulled onto aggregate surfaces.

Tail and Lead-Off Ditches. Ditches shall be opened to provide drainage away from the roadway. No material excavated from these structures shall be reclaimed onto the roadbed.

C. Gravel –

1) Roads- Tailgate spread #4 gravel on roads where indicated by the COR, including Forest Service Road 443, 443A and 443B. Exact locations will be marked by flagging and constitute approximately 2.5 miles in length. Stone must come from GA DOT certified quarry. The gravel will be evenly dispersed along the designated areas in the amounts or depths as required.

2) Campsite Spurs/Parking Areas- Combination tailgate spread and manual spread #4 gravel and GAB on campsite spurs and day use parking areas along Forest Service Road 443, 443A and 443B. Exact locations will be marked by flagging and constitute approximately 1,400 sq ft of area. Stone must come from GA DOT certified quarry.

The gravel will be evenly dispersed along the designated areas in the amounts or depths as required. Compact gravel with a vibratory plate compactor or vibratory roller capable of a minimum of 4,500 pounds of compaction force, until there is no visible displacement.

CIM-0803-07F/Rec_Mtce 34 3400 - 2 TRANSPORTATION

3) Tent Pads/Living Spaces- Manual spread pea gravel on tent pads/living spaces. Exact locations are defined by timber borders and constitute approximately 900 sq ft of area.

Stone must come from GA DOT certified quarry. The gravel will be evenly dispersed along the designated areas in the amounts or depths as required. Compact gravel in the living spaces, only, with a vibratory plate compactor or vibratory roller capable of a minimum of 4,500 pounds of compaction force, until there is no visible displacement.

D. Roadside Mowing and Brushing –

Growth shall be cut as close to the ground surface as practical, normally not to exceed 6 inches high. Mow roadbed, cut-banks and fill-slopes to the full reach of the boom including the overhanging canopies. Mowing will include clearing around signs and appurtenances without damaging them.

All equipment proposed to be used for performance of the work shall be of the size, type, and in such condition to properly pursue the requirements of this contract.

Mower shall be either flat head or rotary cutter capable of cutting trees up to 4 inches diameter.

Rotary cutter shall be 5 feet diameter with two sets of blades (minimum).

Mower boom shall have a reach of 17 feet and be able to mow at any angle within the 270 degree rotation of the cutting head. Boom swing and articulation shall be hydraulically operated.

The Contractor’s proposed equipment shall be made available to the Contracting Officer for inspection prior to award of the contract. If at any time during the course of this contract any equipment is deemed unsatisfactory, the Contracting Officer may order removal and may require a satisfactory replacement at Contractor’s expense.

Any movement or transportation of equipment to or from the work areas required to pursue the work, repair or replace, or for the Contractor’s convenience shall be at the Contractor’s expense.
