Restoration of Disturbed Sites Sample Project 1.4
ITEM 1.4 Hemlock Mountain
Location: Superior Ranger District
Access to Site: To get there, go to Taft, Montana on I-90 and get off at exit 5. Take Forest Service Road 286 up Randolph Creek. Follow signs to Randolph Creek Warming Shelter on Forest Service Road 7759. The project area is at and around the shelter.
Contact: sberon@fs.fed.us or jblackburn@fs.fed.us
Project Description: Currently, motorized ATV use is occurring on unauthorized user-created trails that start at the warming shelter. These unauthorized trails are used to access Hemlock Mountain, which is an elk security area. On the road, just before the warming shelter, is a gate used to block vehicle traffic on Forest Service Road 7777. The gate is ineffective as ATVs and motorbikes can by-pass it and access Hemlock Mountain. Lastly, multiple unauthorized ATV trails have been developed around the warming shelter parking area. These openings are causing additional resource damage.
Objective: The objective of this item is to effectively barricade the unauthorized user-created motorized trails around the warming shelter to prevent future unauthorized motorized access; relocate the gate for Road 7777 to a more effective location; mitigate erosion concerns; de-compact the unauthorized route surface as needed; establish a diverse vegetative cover on damage areas by transplanting 3-7 foot tall trees, scarifying, and seeding; treat noxious weeds; break up the visual impacts caused by unauthorized motorize use; and install treated sign posts.
Government-furnished Supplies/Equipment: On-site trees for transplanting. Grass seed will be furnished by the Government.
Work to be completed:
