Project Description: Off road use by ATVs, motorcycles and four-wheel drive vehicles has created ruts in excess of 3 feet deep. These ruts are full of water in the early spring and are used for “mud bogging.”
Two separate spots are used for such activities and accessed via a wet, unstable route, the result is widespread loss of vegetation and soils and increased sedimentation in creek.
This route goes through an opening of such a size that barricading would not be practical. Contractor is to scarify, seed, and install treated sign posts.
From this horseshoe route, another route extends past an overgrown levy and into the area of greatest concern. At the point where the route passes between the levy and thick vegetation, a barricade of some type needs to be installed. The Government estimates that a boulder barricade along the 20-foot opening between the impassible levy and the thick vegetation would be effective. Boulders shall be ice-berged along the opening with no more than 45 inches between boulders.
The route behind the above mentioned barricade site, forms a figure 8, with the barricade site forming the bottom of the 8 and one of the mud bogs (mud bog #1) extending off the top of the 8. From the barricade site, the Government estimates that by continuing to ice-berg boulders as well as scarifying and seeding to the line of sight would be effective.
The leg from the barrier heading to the left has a line of sight of 120 feet. The leg from the barrier heading to the right has a line of sight of 285 feet.
To complete the figure 8 beyond the above mentioned legs, including mud bog #1 extending off the top of the 8, the route travels an additional 630 feet. Over this length, scarifying and seeding with some additional sloughing-in ruts on the steep banks of mud bog #1 would complete the restoration.
Government-furnished Supplies/Equipment: Onsite trees/vegetation are available for transplanting.
Grass seed will be furnished by the Government.
Work to be Completed:
Rock Barricade - 425 linear 45 inches apart Scarifying 2 inches deep, seed and mulch approximately 8500 SF Sloughing in of mud bog ruts approximately 200 LF Installation of 4 treated 4x4 sign posts mailto:sberon@fs.fed.us mailto:jblackburn@fs.fed.us
