SECTION 21 13 13 – WET PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary

Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Wet pipe automatic sprinkler systems.

2. Water supply piping to support systems.

B. Related Sections:

1. Division 21 Section "Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System"

2. Division 28 Section "Interior Fire Detection and Alarm System"

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Design Requirements

1. Relocate high expansion foam piping to eliminate conflict with aircraft tail. Recalculate system to ensure modifications do not alter system performance.

2. Relocate two butterfly valves and add piping to reduce maintenance issues. See drawings for location.

3. Add spool piece in rise in space above Rooms B109/B113/B118/B119 complex and shorten hanger rods to bring all sprinklers within 12 inches of ceiling. Repipe two branch lines as needed.

4. Replace painted sprinklers in Rooms B120/B121 (assume 10).

5. The system shall be designed for earthquakes as specified by UFC 3-600-01 and shall include all materials, accessories and equipment necessary to provide each system complete and ready for use.

6. Design and install each system to give full consideration to blind spaces, piping, electrical equipment, ductwork and all other construction and equipment to provide complete coverage in accordance with the drawings to be submitted for approval.

7. In the publications referred to herein, the advisory provisions shall be considered to be mandatory, as though the word "shall" had been substituted for "should" wherever it appears; reference to the "authority having jurisdiction" shall be interpreted to mean the

Fire Marshal, Montana Air National Guard.

B. Shop Drawings and Calculations

1. Shop drawings shall be prepared in accordance with Division 1 requirements of these specifications and the requirements of UFC 3-600-01.

WET PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS 21 13 13 - 2

2. Project drawings present one possible solution toward conformance to the referenced documents. The design demonstrated herein is based on a specific set of assumptions.

The design shall be verified by the Contractor and confirmed via shop drawings and calculations. Alternate designs are acceptable when approved by the Engineer and

Authority Having Jurisdiction.

3. System design densities, design areas and hose stream requirements are as included on project drawings.

4. Hydraulic calculations shall utilize the following friction loss coefficients (“C-Factors”) with the Hazen-Williams Formula, as dictated by NFPA 13:

c. 140 for cement lined ductile iron pipe

d. 150 for chlorinated polyvinyl chloride pipe

5. Velocities in piping as determined by hydraulic calculations shall not exceed 20 ft/s.

6. Due to the configuration of the existing fire protection service piping system, there is no ability to perform water flow testing prior to removal of the existing fire pump systems.

The water flow test will be needed only for hydraulic calculation of the Building 321 fire sprinkler system. Fire pumps are sized based on existing conditions, known changes in the water supply system and a safety factor to account for potential corrosion of the existing piping. Temporary piping or hose configurations will be necessary to perform testing. Contractor shall coordinate with the Engineer to determine best steps for performing the water flow test.

Utility Company. Plan work so that duration of the interruption is kept to a minimum.

2. Service: Coordinate the installation of new plumbing utility connections with the Owner, General Contractor and the Utility Company. Coordinate final information on size, location, demand and installation. Ensure that utility connections are achieved in an orderly and expeditious manner.

3. Existing Utilities:

a. The plans indicate the location, type and sizes of various utilities within the site where known. These utilities are indicated as accurately as possible. If utilities are encountered during construction which are not shown on the drawings, ask for instructions from the

Architect. Any relocation or remodeling required will then be directed by change order.

Assume all responsibility for protection of all utilities, shown or not, and repair any damage caused by this construction at no extra charge to the Owner.

b. Investigate with proper authorities for all existing water taps, etc. and make arrangements to pay for all removal charges in original bid.
