About this file

This electrical load analysis document provides specifications for two 2400 horsepower towboats being procured by the US Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Philadelphia. The analysis details the electrical systems required for the towboats, including three DC service panels to provide power for communications equipment, navigation aids, engine controls, lighting and other systems. It analyzes the battery and charging requirements to ensure each panel can provide emergency power for three hours as required. Separate starting batteries are specified for two generators with minimum cold cranking amps and capacity requirements.

The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number W912BU-23-B-0026 for two 2400 HP towboats from the USACE New Orleans office. The analysis provides the necessary specifications for the electrical systems on the towboats to be procured under this solicitation.

We note unity (1.0) load factor is to be used for emergency loads. However it appears that necessary emergency services would last the required time if 1.0 load factor was used.

- Battery banks 1-3 each contain (2X) 12V batteries connected in series to produce 24V.

- Chargers act as constant power supplies during normal operation. Charger rated output must exceed demand during the Towing condition for each panel.

- Batteries must provide 3 hours of operation in the Emergency condition per 46 CFR 143.555 (b)(9).

Using Peukert's law to estimate effective capacity at constant emergency rate of discharge:

It = C*[C/(I*H)]^(k-1), where:

C = rated capacity at nominal discharge time H (Ah) C = 160 H = nominal discharge time (h) H = 20 k = Peukert constant (Assumed 1.15 for AGM Battery) k = 1.15 I = actual discharge current (A) (Panel DC1) I = 32.6 t = actual discharge time (h) (Panel DC2) I = 27.6 It = I * t = effective capacity at discharge current I (Ah) (Panel DC3) I = 26.3

Panel DC1 PASS

It = 130 Ah, effective capacity Charger Supply (A) = 45 t = 4.0 hours of emergency operation Towing Demand (A) = 33

Panel DC2 PASS

It = 133 Ah, effective capacity Charger Supply (A) = 45 t = 4.8 hours of emergency operation Towing Demand (A) = 28

Panel DC3 PASS

It = 134 Ah, effective capacity Charger Supply (A) = 45 t = 5.1 hours of emergency operation Towing Demand (A) = 0
