About this file
This specification sheet for the Scorpion II Towable Attenuator is prepared in support of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Invitation for Bid (IFB) Solicitation #UDOT260158JB, which seeks to establish multiple five-year agency contracts with qualified contractors to provide TrafFix Scorpion II Truck Mounted and Trailer Attenuators and replacement parts with a percentage discount. UDOT requires the TrafFix Scorpion brand specifically due to current inventory of spare parts and fleet uniformity needs within the Equipment Operations Division. The towable attenuator must be FHWA tested and approved to meet MASH Test Level 3 criteria with occupant ridedown acceleration limits below the preferred 15 G threshold. The unit shall be tested for forward skid distance when attached to a 12,000-pound host vehicle and impacted by a 4,500-pound truck traveling at 63.5 miles per hour, with the measured skid distance not exceeding 64 feet on clean, dry pavement with the vehicle in second gear and parking brake engaged.
The towable attenuator specifications detail four major structural components: a steel tongue section with a Telescoping Anti-Rotational System (TARS), an aluminum strut section with curved re-directing aluminum tubes, an aluminum cartridge section with curved re-directing tubes, and a rear axle wheel assembly. The unit shall have progressively collapsing modular cartridge components using crushable honeycomb technology and aluminum structure deformation for impact absorption. Overall dimensions must not exceed 17 feet 9 inches in length and 96 inches in width, with a maximum total weight of 2,400 pounds. The attenuator shall include a single 5,000-pound lifting capacity jack, integrated electric brake system with automatic lock upon hitch failure, and trailer lighting per FMVSS No. 108 with conspicuity tape featuring a black and yellow chevron pattern. An optional arrowboard mounting system is available with two receivers for vertical steel support frame tubes capable of holding a Wanco arrowboard at a minimum 7-foot deployment height. The unit must successfully complete 500 laps on a severe service durability test track performed by an independent third-party facility with no failures recorded.

SCORPION II MASH TOWABLE ATTENUATOR
SPECIFICATIONS
Design and Performance Requirements
The Towable Attenuator shall be FHWA tested and approved to meet the MASH Test Level 3 (TL-3) criteria. The Occupant Ridedown Acceleration Limits (G’s) must be below the reports “Preferred” 15 G’s.
The Towable Attenuator shall be tested and FHWA approved measuring the forward skid distance when attached to a 12,000 lb. Host vehicle and impacted by a 4,500 lb truck traveling at 63.5 mph. The Towable Attenuator must have remained attached to the host vehicle and pintle hook during all impact testing. The measured distance must not exceed 64’. The forward skid distance is dependent on the truck’s transmission being in second gear, and the parking brake set with the truck situated on clean, dry pavement. Engineering calculations will not be accepted.
The Towable Attenuator shall consist of four major components.
Steel Tongue Section including TARS™ Aluminum Strut Section with Curved Re-directing Aluminum Tubes
Aluminum Cartridge Section with Curved Re-directing Aluminum Tubes
Rear Axle Wheel Assembly
The steel tongue section shall include a Telescoping Anti-Rotational System (TARS™). The TARS™ system shall prevent the Towable Attenuator from rotating to the side or detaching from the host vehicle in off-set and off-set angled impacts, Tests 3-52 and 3-53. The Anti-Rotation System shall have a single pintle hook connection and not include any hydraulic systems or secondary/ancillary attachments to the host vehicle.
The cartridge and strut sections of the Towable Attenuator shall be constructed with two structurally re-directive side members. The side members are to be made of two 4 ½” diameter rolled and curved aluminum tubes having a 0.35” wall thickness. The re-directive structural aluminum tube members shall protect the full truck width and have a side to side width of 96”, plus or minus one inch.
The cartridge and strut section of the Towable Attenuator shall be constructed with progressively collapsing modular components, which can be replaced, in successive stages depending on the accident severity. The first cartridge attenuator module shall provide a 5-mph bumper. The second attenuator and third cartridge attenuator modules shall provide a 62.5-mph or 100-kph cushion for the light 1,800 vehicle. The fourth strut attenuator module working in concert with the cartridge module shall provide a 62.5-mph or 100-kph cushion for a heavy 4400 lb vehicle.
The method of impact absorption shall be performed by crushable honeycomb technology in conjunction with aluminum structure deformation.
The Towable Attenuator shall have a rear axle platform to improve trailer stability and prevent the tail from “bottoming out” on driveways or uneven surfaces. The wheels shall not protrude outside the frame or aluminum structure.
Pintle hook mounting plate shall be a minimum ½” thick x 32” wide. The pintle hook shall be rated at 20 tons or greater and shall be securely attached to the mounting plate. Additional mounting hardware will not be accepted.
Overall length from pintle hook connection to rear of attenuator shall not exceed 17’ 9”, plus or minus 1”. Overall width must be 96”, plus or minus 1”.
Overall weight, including steel tongue section, aluminum strut section, and aluminum cartridge section and rear axle wheel assembly must not exceed 2,400 lbs.
The Towable Attenuator shall incorporate a single jack with 5,000 lbs. lifting capacity and 8,000 lbs. static load capacity. Jack to include an 8” diameter cast iron hub wheel with a 2 ½” wide urethane tire.
An integrated electric brake system shall be included and designed to automatically lock the trailer brakes in the event of a hitch failure and the trailer breaks away from the host vehicle.
The Towable Attenuator shall have a trailer lighting assembly per FMVSS No. 108 “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.” The unit shall include brake lights, taillights, turn signals, reverse lights and an ICC bar light. A standard, single, 7 pin trailer connector shall make the connection for all lights to the back of the truck.
Conspicuity tape shall be installed on the upper curved aluminum side members of the strut and cartridge sections.
The surface of the Impact Frame facing oncoming traffic, shall display a black and yellow inverted “V” chevron pattern with 100mm (4”) wide color bands. The yellow stripes shall be prismatic high performance reflective sheeting.
500 laps on a severe service durability test track, performed by an independent third party test facility. Towable Attenuator to record no failures to the anti-rotational system, structural frame, energy absorbing system, axle assembly, wheel assemblies or structural hardware.
Optional Arrowboard The Trailer Attenuator shall have two receivers welded to the trailer frame to provide mounting for a vertical 2” x 3” rectangular steel support frame tubes, with a centerline separation of 51.5”.
The receiver tubes shall have stops to position a Wanco (108548-001, 108504-001) arrowboard frame to hold the arrowboard at a minimum 7’ in the deployed position. The arrowboard frame shall be a dropping and folding system to minimize aerodynamic drag and stress when transporting in the stored position.
Arrowboard shall include: 48x96 25 Light Panel, Wide Angle LED (36), 3 Rear LED markers, Photo Cell on board, 15 ft. pigtail on panel, 30 ft. extension cable, Mil-Spec Amphenol Connectors w/weather caps, 25 or 15 Light Sequence Controller, LED display.
Or, Arrowboard shall include: 48x96 15 Light Panel, Wide Angle LED (36), 3 Rear LED markers, Photo Cell on board, 15 ft. pigtail on panel, 30 ft. extension cable, Mil-Spec Amphenol Connectors w/weather caps, 25 or 15 Light Sequence Controller, LED display
