RFQ 75N97023R00012 - Audiovisual Preservation Reformatting Questions and Answers

Q1. Do you have estimated footage counts on the 16mm and 35mm film reels? Pricing for film scanning and rehousing supplies is all based on footage counts and reel sizes.

A1. The National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) 16mm film holdings tend to be formally-produced, educational titles with standard runtimes of 30 minutes to 1 hour. The average footage for the 16mm film titles under consideration is approximately 430 feet, with this ranging from 150 to 2,000 feet.

The average runtime of 35mm film titles under consideration is 7.5 minutes, or approximately 675 feet of footage. This is because NLM’s 35mm film holdings tend to be older, non-commercial productions that pre-date the introduction of small gauge film. The bidder should consider a wide range of conditions for these selections, irregular frame rates, and the absence of sound.

The above estimates and considerations are subject to change, and aimed at providing further guidance on the nature of NLM’s motion picture film holdings.
