GLOSSARY OF TERMS

DERT Data Systems

Key to the management of the DERT grant portfolio is having an in-depth familiarity with the core NIH/NIEHS grants databases. It is anticipated that the contractor shall acquire the appropriate NIH security clearances and become proficient in the use of these systems. Some of the most frequently used systems are:

1. IMPAC II/Electronic Research Administration (eRA):

http://inside.era.nih.gov/ This complex Oracle database, maintained by NIH, serves as a data platform for many of our database applications. It is composed of a series of database modules containing information on NIH grant applications and funded grants. This data system is used by most DERT staff on a regular basis to access complete information on all grants and grant applications. Grants data are historical back to 1970.

2. QVR – Query, View, Report:

http://era.nih.gov/nih_and_grantor_agencies/other/query_view_and_report.cfm The QVR System is a web-based tool to help eRA users search and view detailed information about grant applications and awards. QVR provides a series of preformatted reports and acts as a portal for viewing grant applications and awards. QVR is available to anyone with IMPAC II user privileges. This includes NIH as well as other agency and contractor users. The system contains sensitive data and is protected behind an NIH firewall; therefore users need a VPN or Parachute account to access it away from a government site.

3. RCDC – Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization:

https://rcdc.era.nih.gov/rcdc/postLogin.do RCDC is the computerized data system NIH uses to report funding on 218 discrete research topics each fiscal year. RCDC also provides funding data for NIH internal planning and analysis.

4. CareerTrac:

https://careertrac.niehs.nih.gov This database is used to track trainee outcomes from both institutional and individual training grants. It provides a robust data set, which allows DERT staff to assess progress and determine future directions for the training programs. It is currently used by DERT staff and Principal Investigators for data entry and reporting. CareerTrac was developed in conjunction with the Fogarty International Center.

5. PEPH Resource Center:

https://connect.niehs.nih.gov/peph/index.cfm?fuseaction=peph.landing The Resource Center is a web-based data system designed to facilitate entry, management, viewing, and publishing of educational and outreach materials created by http://inside.era.nih.gov/ http://era.nih.gov/nih_and_grantor_agencies/other/query_view_and_report.cfm https://rcdc.era.nih.gov/rcdc/postLogin.do https://careertrac.niehs.nih.gov/ https://connect.niehs.nih.gov/peph/index.cfm?fuseaction=peph.landing

NIEHS grantees under the PEPH umbrella. The Resource Center also fosters sharing and exchange of materials, which reduces duplication of efforts and promotes the advancement of new communication strategies. The tool is used by DERT staff and grantees.

6. PubMed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=nihlib PubMed comprises over 20 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. PubMed provides access to additional relevant web sites and links to the other resources.

7. HITS – High Impacts Tracking System (HITS):

This tracking system is currently being designed to track major scientific and public health impacts discovered using NIEHS extramural funding. The system will allow program staff to capture and report impacts in a more systematic fashion. It will be an internal tool used by DERT staff and other planning and evaluation staff within the Institute.

8. SPIRES – Scientific Publication Information Retrieval and Evaluation System:

SPIRES tracks publications produced by NIH grants. It is routinely used by DERT staff and it provides the basis for other NIEHS data systems such as the Who We Fund webpage.

9. The DERT Grant Coding Database (GCDB):

The DERT Grant Coding Database contains detailed scientific and programmatic information about NIEHS grants. Grant records in this database include basic grant information from QVR as well as environmental health science-relevant information

(codes) added by grant coders. The DERT Grant Coding Database is an internal tool used by DERT staff.

10. DERT Output Collection Site (DOCS):

DOCS is a digital document repository for DERT staff to store work such as PowerPoint presentations, white papers, and meeting reports. DOCS is an internal SharePoint site and serves as an easy-to-use, centralized digital archive for past and current documents.

11. Content Management System (CMS):

The CMS is a software system that facilitates creating, editing, organizing, and publishing content.

12. NIEHS Ontology System:

NIEHS is using an ontology system called Synamptica Graphite to store and coalesce all the different ontologies throughout the Institute.
