This document is a technical specification section (02821) for chain link fencing installation prepared by the Great Plains Area Indian Health Service, revised April 2017.
The specification requires furnishing and installation of a 6-foot chain link fabric fence with barbed wire and gates. Steel posts must be SS40 galvanized steel tubing conforming to ASTM F1043 Group IC, ASTM A123, and ASTM A1011 standards. Line posts require a minimum 2.375-inch outside diameter, 0.130-inch wall thickness, and 50,000 psi yield strength, set in 1.0-foot diameter concrete footings 3.5 feet below finished grade. Terminal, corner, pull, and gate posts require 4.000-inch outside diameter tubing. Fence fabric must conform to ASTM A392-11A Class 1, utilizing No. 9 gauge galvanized steel wire in a 2-inch diamond pattern mesh with minimum 1,200 lbs breaking strength and hot-dip zinc coating. Barbed wire must conform to ASTM 121 Class 3, consisting of No. 12½ gauge double strand coated twist wire with large 14-gauge, 4-point barbs spaced approximately 5 inches apart and minimum zinc coating of 0.80 ounces per square foot. Gates include a 12-foot double swing gate, 15-foot rolling cantilever gate, and 3-foot man gate, all with padlockable latching devices manufactured by Dakota Fence Products or equal, and two Master Lock M115XDLF padlocks with four keys.
Installation requirements specify post spacing not exceeding 10 feet on center, fabric attachment using fabric ties with maximum 15-inch spacing on line posts and 24-inch spacing on top posts, and fabric installation parallel to finished grade with maximum 2-inch gap. Three strands of barbed wire must be connected to vertical barbed wire arms, with the top strand installed 12 inches above the fence fabric. Brace assemblies utilizing 3/8-inch galvanized steel with turnbuckles must be installed on all corner, end, and gate posts. Gate installation requires tension bars with bands, diagonal bracing for rigidity, and 2.5-inch maximum gap between gate bottom and finished grade.
