About this file
This document is a comprehensive Lightning Protection System (LPS) design and technical submittal for the Taos-Picuris Health Center in Taos, New Mexico, prepared by Classic Lightning Protection, Inc. The detailed roof plan includes specifications for a UL-listed lightning protection system utilizing aluminum and copper cables, air terminals, surge protection devices, ground rods, and various connectors. Key technical components include Class 1 aluminum and copper cables, air terminals with blunt tips, ground rods, pipe clamps, bus terminals, and surge protection devices for communications and electrical power distribution equipment.
The technical submittal provides extensive documentation of the lightning protection components, including manufacturer certifications from Independent Protection Co., Inc. and East Coast Lightning Equipment, Inc. The system is designed to comply with multiple standards, including UL 96A, NFPA 780, and LPI-175, and will be installed by Jeremy Poff, a UL-certified Master Installer with LPI certification #1565. The submittal includes detailed technical specifications, mounting instructions, component weights, materials, and additional background information on lightning protection principles and system design.

Re: Lightning and Lightning Protection Systems Certification Credentials for IPC
To Whom It Concerns:
As per your request, please use this correspondence as a letter of certification for equipment that is manufactured by Independent Protection Company, Inc., whose plant and offices are located at 1607 S. Main St., Goshen, IN 46526. IPC has been a manufacturer of lightning protection system equipment since 1934. IPC manufactures lightning protection equipment that is approved for use by Underwriters Laboratories.
The products meet or exceed the specified requirements as published by Underwriters Laboratories, namely, UL96 Standard for Lightning Protection Components.
Please note that IPC’s UL Listing Number is E10913. In addition to our listing number, IPC is also a UL approved manufacturer under the designation of 45H2. UL makes quarterly inspection visits to IPC where products are inspected, tested and certified for compliance to UL 96 standard.
In regards to Classic Lightning Protection its owner Jeremy Poff, Classic is UL listed under UL Listing Number is E254673. Jeremy is also certified AS Master Installer by LPI as CMID #1565 and is contractor certified by Arizona as AZROC #201612. He is has recently completed his installer certification through UL.
With regard to system design work that IPC engineering Services provides our contractors, IPC utilizes nationally recognized standards that are published by the Lightning Protection Institute 175, National Fire Protection Association 780 and Underwriters Laboratories 96A.
If there are any questions regarding this letter or the contents, please feel free to contact the writer.

CLASSIC LIGHTNING PROTECTION, INC.
General Comments on Lightning and Lightning Protection Systems
Following are some general comments about lightning strikes related to temperature and also relating to installing concealed systems which is the majority of installation provided today.
Lightning strikes are very hot at roughly 50,000 degrees F which is five times the surface of the sun.
That said, however, when a building is protected by a lightning protection system (lps), the system does not receive this enormous temperature and cause a fire. This is because of the speed at which lightning travels. The return stroke (the current that cause the visible flash) moves upward at about
200,000,000 miles per hour (about 1/3 the speed of light). What occurs in a properly installed lps, is that the positive charge from the ground will leap upwards through the system and awaits a negative charge from passing clouds. If these two opposite charges connect, we now have a lightning strike.
Concealed System Installations
Concealed systems have been the normal practice for many years for those contractors who install lps. Here is a paragraph from the 2017 Edition of NFPA 780.
4.18 Concealed Systems.
4.18.1 General.
4.18.1.1 Requirements covering exposed systems also shall
apply to concealed systems, except conductors shall be permitted to be coursed under roofing materials, under roof framing, behind exterior wall facing, between wall studding, in conduit chases, or embedded directly in concrete or masonry construction.
Additional Background Information on Lightning Strikes – From National Geographic
Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds.
"Sheet lightning" describes a distant bolt that lights up an entire cloud base. Other visible bolts may appear as bead, ribbon, or rocket lightning.
During a storm, colliding particles of rain, ice, or snow inside storm clouds increase the imbalance between storm clouds and the ground, and often negatively charge the lower reaches of storm clouds. Objects on the ground, like steeples, trees, and the Earth itself, become positively charged— creating an imbalance that nature seeks to remedy by passing current between the two charges.
Lightning is extremely hot—a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. This heat causes surrounding air to rapidly expand and vibrate, which creates the pealing thunder we hear a short time after seeing a lightning flash.
A typical cloud-to-ground lightning bolt begins when a step-like series of negative charges, called a stepped leader, races downward from the bottom of a storm cloud toward the Earth along a channel at about 200,000 mph (300,000 kph). Each of these segments is about 150 feet (46 meters) long.
When the lowermost step comes within 150 feet (46 meters) of a positively charged object, it is met by a climbing surge of positive electricity, called a streamer, which can rise up through a building, a tree, or even a person.
When the two connect, an electrical current flows as negative charges fly down the channel towards earth and a visible flash of lightning streaks upward at some 200,000,000 mph (300,000,000 kph), transferring electricity as lightning in the process.
Some types of lightning, including the most common types, never leave the clouds but travel between differently charged areas within or between clouds. Other rare forms can be sparked by extreme forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and snowstorms. Ball lightning, a small, charged sphere that floats, glows, and bounces along oblivious to the laws of gravity or physics, still puzzles scientists.
About one to 20 cloud-to-ground lightning bolts is "positive lightning," a type that originates in the positively charged tops of storm clouds. These strikes reverse the charge flow of typical lightning bolts and are far stronger and more destructive. Positive lightning can stretch across the sky and strike "out of the blue" more than 10 miles from the storm cloud where it was born.

172XP-M1
Structural Adhesive/Sealant
M-1 is a moisture curing, polyether adhesive/sealant designed for application in damp, dry, or cold climates. M-1 is solvent free and contains no isocyanates. M-1 will not shrink upon curing, will not discolor when exposed to UV light, and can not "out-gas", or bubble, on damp surfaces as urethane sealants often do. M-1 has resilient "elastomeric" properties and excellent adhesion to most construction materials. M-1 is capable of joint movement in excess of 25% in both compression and extension. M-1 can be used effectively in many difficult construction site conditions and it cures in wet or dry climate conditions and at low temperatures (30*F). Product is supplied in 10.5 oz. cartridges
