About this file

This document is a technical specification table establishing water quality testing requirements based on Washington Administrative Code (WAC) Section 246-291-171.

The document specifies Maximum Contaminant Limits (MCLs) for inorganic chemicals and physical characteristics that must be tested in water samples, along with a required bacterial test. For inorganic chemicals, primary MCLs are established for 15 substances including antimony (0.006 mg/L), arsenic (0.01 mg/L), barium (2.0 mg/L), beryllium (0.004 mg/L), cadmium (0.005 mg/L), chromium (0.1 mg/L), cyanide (0.2 mg/L), fluoride (4.0 mg/L), mercury (0.002 mg/L), nickel (0.1 mg/L), nitrate as N (10.0 mg/L), nitrite as N (1.0 mg/L), selenium (0.05 mg/L), and thallium (0.002 mg/L). Sodium is also required for monitoring despite lacking an established MCL due to public health significance. Secondary MCLs are established for nine additional substances including chloride (250.0 mg/L), copper (1.3 mg/L), fluoride (2.0 mg/L), iron (0.3 mg/L), lead (0.015 mg/L), manganese (0.05 mg/L), silver (0.1 mg/L), sulfate (250.0 mg/L), and zinc (5.0 mg/L). For physical characteristics, turbidity has a primary MCL of 1.0 NTU, while secondary MCLs include color (15 Color Units), specific conductivity (700 umhos/cm), total dissolved solids (500 mg/L), and pH (6.5–8.5). Note that copper and lead MCLs are designated as Maximum Contaminant Level Goals (MCLGs) per the Washington State Department of Health Lead and Copper Rule.

*Although there is not an established MCL for sodium, there is enough public health significance connected with sodium levels to require inclusion in inorganic chemical and physical monitoring.
