About this file
This document is a comprehensive inspection and compliance form for 87-foot patrol boat (87 WPB) propellers, detailing the inspection requirements and acceptance criteria for propeller manufacturing and repair/overhaul work.
The form establishes mandatory inspection protocols across ten major sections. Section 1 addresses material composition per ABS 7 standards (applicable only to new manufacturing, not overhaul/repair). Section 2 requires bolt hole thread engagement inspection using go/no-go gauges for three primary holes and a lifting hole, with immediate Contracting Officer notification required for failures. Section 3 specifies hub bore dimensional inspections as a critical decision point, including large and small end diameters, hub length, and keyway specifications, all referenced to Coast Guard Drawing 87 WPB 245-003. Sections 4 and 5 cover surface finish measurements and balancing requirements, with specific micro-inch Ra values for blade and hub locations and residual unbalance calculations using MIL-STD-167-1A. Section 6 requires 100 percent dye penetrant inspection with comprehensive surface defect documentation on both pressure and suction faces, with photographic alternatives permitted if they comprehensively document blade, hub, and defect locations.
Section 7 contains extensive inspection data requirements including blade radii measurements, local pitches across three segments per blade (with ±2.0% tolerance), section pitch, mean pitch, blade section widths, maximum thickness measurements at prescribed stations with ±0.005" tolerance, track deviation/rake measurements, and edge condition verification. Sections 8 and 9 address fairness assessment, propeller identification markings (serial number, ship class, rotation direction, NSN, design specifications, manufacturer information, weight, and material grade), and photo documentation phases. All inspections require dual signatures from both contractor inspectors and USCG representatives, establishing joint accountability throughout the inspection process.

6. Surface Inspection
Document ALL defects on the following sheets. For the dye penetrant inspection, highlight/annotate ALL defects that fall outside of the allowable parameters set by ABS Part 7, Section 10, Table 1. Provide two sheets, one per face and label pages 5a and 5b.
NOTE: Photographs may be inserted in place of these inspection forms provided the photos collectively encompass the entire propeller and adhere to the instructions for documenting/highlighting/annotating defects. The photographs must be labeled such that the blades, hub locations and defect locations are identifiable. See the following page for the hub diagram.
