CG Yard – 119 Years of Service to Our Nation
Photos (left to right & top to bottom):
CG YARD, first “land-based” home to the “Revenue School of Instruction” (the original Coast Guard Academy) from 1900-1910.
A 52’ SPC-HWX attempts to cross the bar in heavy surf. The entire class was designed and built at the CG Yard (beginning 1956); these boats are still operating in the Pacific Northwest.
The 36500 returns from the PENDLETON rescue, carrying 32 souls on board. Coxswain Petty Officer Bernie Webber went to Recruit Training Center Curtis Bay (CG Yard) in 1946. That same year, the 36500 was being built at the Yard, several hundred yards where he received his indoctrination into the CG. PO Webber and his crew won the Gold Lifesaving Medal for their heroic actions, and were the subject of the recent movie, “The Finest Hours.”
CGC CONFIDENCE launches in 1966. CONFIDENCE is a 210’ WMEC built at the Yard, and still in service today, 51 years later!
The CGC PONCHARTRAIN & CGC MENDOTA (255’ cutters) were built at the CG Yard in 1944. Photo shows MENDOTA under construction on Yard shipways.
The Yard’s version of “Rosie the Riveter” – A Yard employee builds a motor lifeboat during World War II. Until the 1970s, the Yard designed and built nearly all of the boats that were operated by the Coast Guard. Some of the world’s best motor lifeboats were designed and built at the Yard (e.g. 36’ MLB, 44’ MLB, 52’ MLB).
