Introduction

1.1 Roadway Signs

This category includes two kinds of signs: Road Guide Signs and Pathfinders.

A distinctive system to guide motorists to park entrances and along park roadways, these signs use new lower-cost, brighter, and longer-lasting materials which along with the recently developed NPS Roadway type face will enhance message legibility and visitor safety. Traffic regulatory signs will follow Federal Highway Administration standards unless otherwise supplied.

Pathfinders serve as an additional assist in guiding visitors to specific park sites and features in urban and highly developed suburban environments. By displaying the NPS Arrowhead and other graphic elements, Pathfinders also help to reinforce park and agency identity.

Road Guide Signs are placed on park roads to direct the first-time or infrequent visitor to facilities and areas within a park. MUTCD Regulatory and Warning Signs are used within a park to govern the operation of motor vehicles.

As required, MUTCD Regulatory and Warning Signs comply in content and appearance with Federal Highway Administration guidelines as expressed in the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The GWMP Pathfinders and Road Guide signs have a distinctive appearance from most road signs.

GWMP Design Guidelines 9 | P a g e

Overview

1.1 Introduction to Graphic Standards

The building blocks for the GWMP Signage consist of six graphic components:

typography, grid formats, Arrowhead symbol, directional arrow graphics, recreation symbols, and color.

These components are used in specific ways to visually enhance particular types of communications consistently throughout the National Park System. This chapter provides specific guidelines on graphic standards for Roadway Signs.

Typography

GWMP Design Guidelines 10 | P a g e

GWMP Design Guidelines 11 | P a g e

Typography

2.1 Introduction

The GWMP Standards specify two typefaces for sign legends: Clearview (a serif font), and

Frutiger (san serif font).

Clearview is the primary typeface used on Roadway Signs.

Frutiger is used as a secondary typeface on VIS Signs and Park and Facility Identification

Signs.

GWMP Design Guidelines 12 | P a g e

2.2 Specifications and Compliance

Only these fonts are to be used on Roadway Signs. Alternates — such as Helvetica, Century, Times Roman, or Clarendon — are not acceptable.

Specified typefaces are to be used in the production of all graphic panels. Conversions that change the typographic style, letter spacing, alignment, stroke-width, or size will be rejected.

2.3 Method of Typographic Display

All legends are displayed in Clearview, in upper and lowercase (U/lc), with initial capital letters only unless otherwise noted. Advance Guidance Legends are displayed in

Clearview, in uppercase (UC).

2.4 Letter Space Adjustment for Legibility

Signs viewed from a distance require more space between letters (additional tracking) than those viewed by pedestrians from a standing position. Computer software programs provide precise adjustments for such tracking needs. Within the GWMP Signage, custom tracking of legends is limited.

Clearview have the correct proportional letter spacing built into the font for Roadway

Sign applications. The numerical value of the specified tracking is identified with the individual grid specifications.

GWMP Design Guidelines 13 | P a g e

2.5 Typographic Alignment

Destination legends are placed flush left (left justified) on the grid with initial letter aligned to the left side of a vertical stroke unless specified as centered on the layout grid such as Advance Guidance.

Alignment: Initial Capital Letters align on the leading edge of the vertical stroke. Round and angular letters are placed slightly to the left as shown so as to appear aligned flush left on the grid.

Vertical Alignment: The serif is allowed to extend beyond the edge of the grid. Letters including Y, W, A, etc. are aligned inside the serif at the location where the body of the actual letter begins as shown in the diagram on the left.

Horizontal alignment: The distance between the baseline of a line of type and the imaginary line across the top of capital letters becomes the dimension on which interline spacing is based.

NPS Arrowhead

3.1 Introduction

Since its introduction in 1952, the NPS Arrowhead logo has become a well-recognized symbol of the agency. Changes to the logo, adopted in 2001, helped to ensure that the

Arrowhead appears more often, more consistently, and more legibly on all NPS communication materials, including signs. The GWMP Sign Standards prescribe the use of the NPS Arrowhead on selected Park and Facility Identification signs, and on specified

Pathfinders.

Information about the NPS Arrowhead is available online at: www.graphics.nps.gov. The two Arrowheads required for use on signs have been optimized for a variety of imaging technologies and for distance viewing.

The Arrowhead symbol is to be considered all inclusive. The Arrowhead should not be altered or redrawn, nor should any element within the Arrowhead be removed, replaced, or modified.

http://www.graphics.nps.gov/

GWMP Design Guidelines 15 | P a g e

3.2 Arrowhead Application

Pathfinder Signs display the Arrowhead along with the name of the agency (National Park

Service – U.S. Department of the Interior) in an overbar that contrasts in color with the lower portion of the sign panel.

Pathfinders are primarily used in urban, suburban, and populated rural areas along streets and roads to assist the motorist to various sites clustered along the parkway. The

NPS Arrowhead and typographic designations provide a consistent nation- wide identifier that helps guide visitors through congested environments to a park’s entrance(s).

GWMP Design Guidelines 16 | P a g e

3.3 Arrowhead Materials

Arrowheads may be manufactured in a variety of materials, methods, and colors, either as an integral part of the sign panel, or separately and affixed to the panel or to a masonry upright that is part of an overall sign structure.

Arrowheads in the overbar of these signs are screen-printed NPS Brown on white reflective sheeting along with the dark green overbar. This screen-printed material is then applied to the sign panel.

Artwork for the Arrowhead is available from the GWMP Signage Manager.

3.4 Arrowhead Color Standards

Both a three-color (TC) and a one-color (OC) version are available. Guidance on when to use each is provided below. A color palette has been selected for reproducing the

Arrowhead on NPS signs. These colors must never be changed or altered in any way

GWMP Design Guidelines 17 | P a g e

Color Standards

4.1 Color Standards for Roadway Signs

Depending on application, colors are specified according to the Pantone Matching System

(PMS) or to standard Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) highway sign colors.

These colors will be matched and formulated for the respective type of manufacturing material. For other options in the use of color, contact the GWMP Architect.

Road Guide (RG) Sign panels are FHWA Recreation Brown with White legend. For

Pathfinders (PF), the overbar is Dark Green with one-color NPS Brown Arrowhead logo on a White background and the main sign panel being FHWA Recreation Brown with a

White legend.

Both FHWA Recreation Brown and FHWA white are retro reflective colors based on

Federal Highway Administration standards. The Dark Green Pathfinder overbar and NPS

Brown Arrowhead logo are screen-printed with transparent inks on reflective sheeting.

GWMP Design Guidelines 18 | P a g e

Colors for Roadway Signs use retroreflective FHWA Recreation Brown with the addition of the dark green NPS identity for Pathfinders, and use of FHWA Yellow to improve communications. Other FHWA colors apply for regulatory signs.

SEGD National Recreation Symbols

5.1 Introduction

Symbols provide a common, nonverbal language to transmit information to park visitors regardless of their native language. They also help affirm or clarify verbal instructions for visitors.

This system includes 130 symbols in the positive format, excluding the recycle symbol

(not part of the sign program), 63 prohibitions with a red circle and slash graphic over a white figure, and 21 warnings in a yellow diamond.

5.2 Use of Symbols

Although symbols are considered an international pictographic language, many park visitors may not be familiar with specific symbols, so legends occasionally must be added to affirm the messages, especially where activities are prohibited. In these instances the symbol is combined with words.

To determine whether or not a symbol sign would be appropriate for a specific use, the following criteria should be used:

• Does the symbol represent an accommodation, service or activity?

• Is the accommodation, service or activity obvious? The obvious should not be symbolized.

• Will the symbol be a substitute or reinforce a message? Symbols may be displayed alone, augment a worded legend, or dominate a legend.

• Will multiple symbols clutter a sign? Road and Highway Guide Signs with three or more word legends should not include symbols.

GWMP Design Guidelines 20 | P a g e

5.3 Symbol use on Roadway Signs

The SEGD National Recreation Symbols shall be used on all Roadway signs. Symbol use on all MUTCD Regulatory and Warning Signs that are placed on park roads shall comply with the latest version of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the current edition of the Standard Highway Signs book. This includes: cross walks, horse crossing, deer, livestock, snowmobile, bus, truck, bike, or other symbols used specifically on regulatory and warning signs as specified for roads in the MUTCD.

5.4 Symbol of Access

The GWMP Signage has adopted the symbol of accessibility included in the SEGD

National Recreation Symbols for clarity and consistency with all other symbols used in the standards. Actual application of the symbol including placement as a white figure in a blue rectangle is to be consistent with the Accessibility Guidelines and Standards of the

US Access Board.

5.5 Type Size and Proportional Display of Symbol

Recreation symbol use will vary depending on application. In most applications, the size of the symbol (overall height and width of the border rectangle) will be in direct proportion to the size of the primary legend. See Grid formats in Chapter 3 for specific guidelines.

5.6 Symbol Colors

Refer to the examples provided in this manual for general guidance on the use of color. All positive symbols must be displayed with adequate contrast for legibility.

5.8 New Symbols

The design of the symbols have been prepared with careful attention to proportion, detail and line weight for each application. Do not modify or augment the design of the SEGD

National Recreation Symbols for any local purpose or change the relationship of the symbol to the surrounding shape. If the symbol is not appropriate for a specific communication requirement, contact the GWMP Signage Manager for assistance.

New symbols are selectively added to the SEGD National Recreation Symbol system based on careful review of need, and a determination that a symbol is an effective way to communicate the idea proposed. Requests for new symbols are to be directed to the

GWMP Architect for assistance.

5.9 Symbol Display

The 130 recreation symbols in the system are displayed on the following pages in six basic groups: General, Accommodations, Services, Land Recreation, Water Recreation, and

Winter Recreation. Next to each symbol is its identification name and one to four icons showing the applicable formats for each symbol (recreation, prohibition, warning and highway). All symbols are shown in the recreation format. Note that not all symbols are intended for use on highway signs, with many symbols used only on trail identification or general information signs viewed at close proximity. The prohibition format is displayed with the red slash placed behind the symbol. Research has shown that recognition and understanding is increased when the symbol graphic is not interrupted by the red slash. The 63 prohibition symbols, and 21 warning symbols are displayed in the up-coming pages within this section.

Note that in reproducing symbols in artwork, all symbols and borders must proportionally match one-to-one the sample artwork included in these specifications.

When enlarging a symbol as an EPS file, check Maintain Uniform Scale within the software when assigning a proportion for enlargement or reduction.

Directional Arrow

6.1 Introduction

There is only one style of directional arrow graphics used on GWMP Roadway Signs.

6.2 Arrow Artwork

The arrows are sized as a proportion of the primary legend size based on a transparent alignment box placed around the arrow. Arrows are placed on the sign grid by aligning the transparent box to the baselines as shown in the grid formats.

6.3 Arrow Type A

Arrow Type A is used on Road Guide Signs and Pathfinders.

GWMP Design Guidelines 29 | P a g e

Chapter 3 Grid Layouts

GWMP Design Guidelines 30 | P a g e

1.1 Introduction to Grid Layouts

Roadway Signs are provided in two formats.

• Road Guide Signs used to guide visitors to destinations within a park.

• Pathfinder Signs used to guide visitors to a NPS destination and alert visitors that they are entering a national park.

All motorists guide signs use the Clearview typeface, unless otherwise noted.

1.2 Road Guide Signs

This sign type is formatted using standardized layout grids displayed in this chapter (RG-1 to RG-11). The signs are graphically based on the message size, not the panel size. This ensures that the relationship between the legend and the background on all signs is consistent. The formats are designed to present information so it can be read quickly from a moving vehicle.

The legend size referred to as “x” is based on the capital letter height. Interline spaces accommodate the descender of lowercase letters. This proportional relationship is maintained regard- less of sign size, so a common grid or template can be used. That means that the same file that has been used to develop the initial layout can be digitally enlarged to the actual sign size for production.

Sign sizes may vary because of legend content, but all of them are based on a similar set of pro- portions designed to maintain alignments and consistent space between legend elements. For example, the margins are always the same proportion to the legend size.

GWMP Design Guidelines 31 | P a g e

The panels may be a combination of legend, a directional arrow, and perhaps symbols. A secondary legend may share the same directional arrow.

There are two types of Road Guide Sign grids. The first set consists of modules that can be assembled interchangeably for installations with multiple directions posted on the same panel (RG-1, RG-2, RG-3, RG-4, RG-5, RG-9, RG-10, and RG-11). The second set consists of stand- alone, single-message, or single-destination modules that are not assembled into larger signs (RG-6, RG-7, and RG-8).

1.3 Pathfinder Signs

Pathfinders, available in two legend heights and three panel widths, are used for single destinations typically and include the NPS identification and Arrowhead at the top of the panel. See the layout grids displayed in this section designated PF.

1.4 Alternate Formats

Although most legends can be accommodated within the standard grids, unique situations might require modifications to create effective panels. In such instances, planners should consult with the GWMP Architect.

1.5 Small Guide Signs on Secondary Roads

Guide signs placed on roads within picnic areas, and other “off road” facilities are part of the VIS System (Visitor Information System). Refer to Volume 3 of the UniGuide standards for specific guidelines of the VIS System.

Road Guide Grids

2.1 RG-1 Road Guide for Single and Multiple Destinations with

This Road Guide format accommodates multiple line destination legends for any direction.

An RG-1 sign panel assembly can display up to 3 different destinations with up to 3 directional modules.

The first legend is always an x below the top edge of the brown legend field. Each new destination legend is separated by an x vertical space unless the panel includes a two-line destination. If a panel includes a two-line destination, all destinations in the module are separated by 1.5x. When a two-line destination occurs there is a .66x space between the first and second line. All legends are left justified.

The legends on straight and left directional modules are placed 4.5x from the left edge of the brown legend field. The arrow is then horizontally centered in this 4.5x space. The

GWMP Design Guidelines 39 | P a g e distance between the end of the longest destination legend and the right edge of the brown legend field is 1.5x.

Legends on right directional modules are placed 1.5x from the left edge of the brown legend field. The arrow is then placed to the right of the destination legend, with the right edge of its interior alignment box 1.5x to the left of the right edge of the legend field. The distance between the end of the longest destination legend and the left edge of the arrow’s interior alignment box is 1.5x.

On each RG-1 panel the arrow’s interior alignment box is always top aligned with the first destination legend, unless noted otherwise.

All RG-1 sign panel assemblies are surrounded by a white border. The border is equal on all sides (top, bottom, right side, and left side) is .166x. If more than one panel is used in a sign panel assembly there is a .125x white inter-module space placed to visually separate the panels. The overall sign panel has an x radius corners. The inter-module space will always be horizontal and will not have a radius edge.

Certain Signs will require a white border of .125x to visually separate multiple NPS destinations and two destinations indicating two different directions.

GWMP Design Guidelines 40 | P a g e

2.2 RG-2 Road Guide Multiple Destinations with Symbol and Advance

This format combines recreation symbols with one or two line destination legends for any direction. An RG-2 sign panel assembly can display up to three different destinations and can contain up to three panels with no more than 8 words of symbols.

The size of the recreation symbol is 2.5x. The first recreation symbol is placed an x below the top of the brown legend field. Each additional symbol is separated by an x vertical space. All symbols are an x to the left of the destination legend.

Destination legends are top aligned with their corresponding recreation symbols. Two line destinations have a .66x space between the first and second line. All legends are left justified.

GWMP Design Guidelines 41 | P a g e

The recreational symbols on straight and left directional modules are placed 4.5x to the right of the left edge of the brown legend field. The arrow is then horizontally centered in this 4.5x space.

The recreational symbols on right directional modules are placed 1.5x to the right of the left edge of the brown legend field. The arrow is then placed to the right of the destination legend, with the right edge of its interior alignment box 1.5x to the left of the right edge of the brown legend field. The distance between the end of the longest destination legend and the left edge of the interior arrow box should be 1.5x.

On each RG-2 panel the arrow’s interior alignment box is always top aligned with the first destination legend.

2.3 RG-3 Road Guide Single and Multiple Destinations with Route Shield and Advance Guidance or Directional Arrow

This format combines a route shield with one or two line destination legends for any direction. An RG-3 sign panel assembly can display up to three different destinations and can contain up to three panels. The route shield is 2.5x wide and is placed an x below the top of the brown legend field and on the left side of the legend. There is to be only one route shield per module.

The first legend is an x below the top of the brown legend field. Each new dimension legend is separated by an x vertical space, unless the panel includes a two line destination.

If a panel includes a two line destination, all destinations in the panel are separated by a

1.5x space. Two line destination have a .66x interline space between the first and second line. All legends are left justified and placed an x to the right of route shield.

2.4 RG-4 Road Guide Single and Multiple Destinations with 2 to 3 Route Shields and Advance Guidance or Directional Arrow

This format includes two options: 1) panel with directional arrow, and 2) panel with advance guidance legend. An RG-4 sign panel assembly can accommodate a one single or double line destination legend or two single line destination legends.

The route shields are 2.5x high (double digit displays are 2.5x wide, triple digit displays are 3x wide) and are placed x below the top of the brown legend field. The left most route shield is left aligned with the legend, and each additional shield is separated by a 1.5x horizontal space.

GWMP Design Guidelines 45 | P a g e

An optional cardinal direction legend is placed as needed. It is top aligned with an x space to the right of the right most route medallion. An advance guidance legend is placed below the primary destination and is centered on the panel as shown. The compass direction and advance guidance legends are .8x.

The primary destination legend is x below the bottom of the route shield. Two line destinations have a .66x line space between the first and second line. Two individual destination legends are separated by an x line space.

All RG-4 sign panel assemblies are surrounded by a white border. The border is equal on sign panel assembly there is a .125x white inter-module space placed to visually separate the panels. The overall sign panel has an x radius corners.

GWMP Design Guidelines 46 | P a g e

Panels with directional arrow: if sign panel assembly includes a second directional module, the combined assembly should not have more than 4 destination displays in the sign panel assembly. The destination legends and route shields each count as a destination display. As a horizontal modular assembly, this grid will accommodate a second direction module. The second module would be added only if the first panel contains no more than three destination displays.

Legends on panels with directional arrows directing motorists to the right are aligned to the left of the panel with 1.5x margin. On these panels, the distance between the end of destination legend and the right direct4ed arrow should not be less than 1.5x, but is determined by the longest legend in the overall assembly of modules, and with the arrow placed flush to the tight with 1.5x between tip of arrow and edge of brown legend field.

Panel with advance guidance legend: advance guide legend is used in lieu of directional arrow and is placed an x below the route shields flush to the left with 1.5x left margin. The distance between the end of destination legend and the right edge of the module should not be less than 1.5x but is determined by the longest legend in the overall assembly of modules. The .8x legend is displayed in uppercase unless others wise noted.

GWMP Design Guidelines 47 | P a g e

2.5 RG-5 Road Guide Single Destination with Multiple Symbols and
