This memorandum provides details of our revised foundation recommendations listed in our May 2018 “Soils and Foundation Report No. 02-17.”

Recommendations listed in this Memorandum should supersede the ones listed in the original report.

DESIGN ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

We previously recommended supporting the proposed structure on 12-inch driven pre-stressed reinforced concrete (PSC) piles. During the final design process, the design and construction teams expressed their concern regarding the possibility of encountering existing timber piles during the driving process.

We concluded that pre-boring may be required for the new PSC piles to reach the design tip elevations. Pre-boring should be done in accordance with VADOT specifications.

We now recommend utilizing 14-inch driven PSC piles to support the proposed structure. Additionally, we revaluated the pile lengths due to the possible loss of skin friction from pre-boring. Our new recommendations are summarized in the table below.

Updated Pile Lengths for the 14-inch PSC Piles

Pre-boring depth (feet)

Pile Embedded Length (feet)
