Special Contract Requirements Project: OR FLAP DOT CRGNSA 100(8), Multnomah Falls Viaducts Repair

(3) Surfaces to be buried and culvert surfaces above finished ground that are not visible from the traveled way or a walkway.

Begin finishing as soon as the forms are removed. Remove fins and irregular projections from all surfaces that are exposed or will be waterproofed. Remove bulges and offsets with carborundum stones or discs. Remove localized, poorly-bonded rock pockets and honeycombed concrete, and replace with sound concrete or packed mortar. Fill all holes with mortar in the same cement/aggregate ratio as the concrete being finished, and float to an even, uniform finish. A bonding agent may be used with the approval of the CO.

Clean and point form tie cavities, holes, broken corners and edges, and other defects. Saturate the area with water. Finish the area with mortar that is less than 1-hour old. After the mortar is set, rub it (if required) and continue curing. Match exposed surfaces to surrounding concrete.

Carefully tool and remove free mortar and concrete from construction and expansion joints.

Leave joint filler exposed for its full length with clean, true edges.

Rub or grind bearing surfaces on piers and abutments to the specified elevation and slope.

If the final finished surface is not true and uniform, rub it according to Subsection 552.16(b).

Delete paragraph (b) and substitute the following:

(b) Class 2 – rubbed finish.

(1) Unless otherwise specified in the plans, Finish finish the following surfaces with a Class 2 rubbed finish:

(a) Surfaces of bridge superstructures except those surfaces designated to receive a Class 1 or other finish;

(b) Surfaces of bridge piers, piles, columns and abutments, and retaining walls above finished ground and to at least 12 inches below finished ground;

(c) Surfaces of open spandrel arch rings, spandrel columns and abutment towers;

(d) Surfaces of pedestrian undercrossings except floors and surfaces to be covered with earth;

(e) Surfaces above finished ground of culvert headwalls and endwalls when visible from the traveled way or walkway;

(f) Inside surfaces of culvert barrels higher than 48 inches that are visible from the traveled way. Finish for a distance inside the barrel at least equal to the height of the culvert; and

(g) Surfaces of railings.

(2) Complete a Class 1 finish according to Subsection 552.16(a); and Create a Class 2 rubbed finish according to steps (a)(1) through (f)(6), below.

Revised by Amendment A002

F-25 DIVISION 550

Project: OR FLAP DOT CRGNSA 100(8), Multnomah Falls Viaducts Repair

Dispose of waste according to Subsections 107.10(b) and 203.05. Do not allow any slurry or sediment or concrete waste to infiltrate the Contractor access path or the existing UPRR railroad ballast.

552.19A Concrete Repair (Patching & Cathodic Protection). (Added Subsection).

(a) Test Panel. Submit a 1.5”x12”x12” cured test panel of concrete material, with a Class 1-ordinary surface finish on one face, and a Class 2 Class 4-rubbed finish on the other face, and do not start work until the test panel is accepted.

(b) Locating and marking. Locate and mark the following:

(1) All concrete having visible spalling or delamination due to corrosion of reinforcement or metal appurtenances such as bearing devices, drains, and conduits. Include within the repair boundaries all damaged concrete at the edges of spalls.

(2) All visible unsound patches of material.

(3) All concrete that is visibly loose, or that becomes dislodged or loosened when struck with a 16-ounce masonry hammer or by other approved techniques.

Verify the presence of steel with a metal detector or other non-destructive means suitable for concrete containing aggregate larger than 2 inches.

Investigate all spots of rust visually and with a metal detector to determine if a metallic object is present. If a metal object is present mark the location.

In areas where spalling or delamination is not visually detectable, but is indicated by sounding, use a rebar locator and mark reinforcing bars and their minimum concrete cover. Remove a 4-inch wide (as measured perpendicular to the bar) exploration area centered over the bar.

Provide an exploration boundary area with an initial length of 8 inches if splitting cracks are present directly over and parallel to reinforcing bars and suggest a potential for corrosion.

Remove as much splitting crack length as needed until clean bar is exposed. If rust scale or pitting is found on the exposed reinforcing bar, or if the remaining concrete is separated from the bar, mark the damaged concrete area for removal.

Do not use internal angles less than 45 degrees in defining the repair boundaries. Make all repairs at least 2 inches wide in each direction. Within these restrictions, mark boundaries such that repair areas can be efficiently sawed and excavated.

Determine and mark the location and extent of each repair excavation. Only begin concrete removal after location and extent have been verified by the CO.

The CO will perform verification surveys of selected sections of the work and determine the final quantity of repairs. Only begin excavation after the CO has completed the verification surveys.

(c) Concrete removal. Perform work according to Subsection 203.04(c).

F-28 DIVISION 550

Project: OR FLAP DOT CRGNSA 100(8), Multnomah Falls Viaducts Repair

After the substrate has been saturated, temporarily remove the form and, immediately before placing mortar, remove all dust, dirt, and other debris by flushing the surface with water pressurized to at least 60 psi (0.41 megapascals), followed by blasting with clean compressed air to remove excess water. Provide a damp surface free of standing water and free of contaminants when applying repair mortar. Light surface rust that appears during the pre-soak stage does not need to be removed. When the concrete surface is in saturated surface dry condition and free of contaminants, and reinforcement is clean or has only light surface rust, immediately reinstall the forms and place mortar.

(3) Mixing repair mortar. When a package of prepackaged repair mortar is opened, mix the entire contents of the package.

Mix repair mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions including, but not limited to, mixing speed, mixing time, and mixing equipment.

(4) Placing repair mortar. Pump repair mortar and achieve thorough and uniform hydration without the use of excess water.

Only place mortar after acceptance of saturated surface dry condition by the CO.

Do not place mortar during freezing weather or if temperatures are likely to drop below freezing during the cure period for the mortar. Do not apply mortar to frosted surfaces.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding temperature and weather conditions during mortar placement.

Provide adequate pumping pressure into each port to ensure mortar completely fills the cavity and mortar is observed at all vents. Vibrate only if approved by the CO in advance.

(5) Adjacent surface protection. Protect surfaces outside the repair area from mortar overshoot and drip. Remove the excess material from these areas after the application has been completed.

(6) Mix records. Record proportion (by weight) of sand to Portland cement and the quantity of any additives for all mortar mixed on-site at the start of each mortar placement operation and every time proportions or additives are changed. Keep a record of which mix is used for each repair area.

(j) Curing. Take care to avoid cracks in the new mortar due to excessive surface evaporation.

Continuously cure all newly applied mortar according to the mortar manufacturer’s recommended curing schedule.

(k) Finish. Finish all exposed surfaces and surface defects to straight and true lines as shown.

Provide a Class 2-Rubbed Class 4 – Sandblasted finish according to Subsection 552.16(c) 552.16(b) on all exposed surfaces and a Class 1 – Ordinary surface finish according to Subsection 552.16(a)on all other surfaces.

Measurement

552.21 Add the following:

The volume of concrete required, outside the neat lines of the footing, to pour against undisturbed material as shown on the plans will not be measured for payment or subject to adjustment according to Subsection 109.02(c). When the CO directs the removal of material below the established elevation of the bottom of the footing, the volume of concrete required to fill the void will be measured for payment.

Concrete repair (patching and cathodic protection) and concrete repair (rail patching) will be measured on the area basis. Measurement will be the outside measurement of the area of work marked for concrete repair, including areas marked for mortar buildup over shallow rebar, after locating concrete repair and before concrete removal work. The area of work marked for concrete repair does not include initially sound concrete that is damaged or micro-fractured by the Contractor’s operations. No measurement will be made for installation of zinc anode installation.

Grout (West Viaduct and East Viaduct) to be measured by the dimensions shown in the plans on the cubic yard basis.

Do not measure patching top of deck surfaces under Subsection 569.06(a).

F-45 DIVISION 550

Project: OR FLAP DOT CRGNSA 100(8), Multnomah Falls Viaducts Repair

569.06 Surface Preparation. Delete paragraph (a) and substitute the following:

(a) Concrete repairs. Comply with the requirements of Subsections 552.19 and 552.19A.

Use material conforming to this Section to patch top of deck surfaces, and comply with the requirements of Subsection 552.19(a) and 552.19A(a) when proposing new materials.

569.15 Handling and Placing Concrete. Amend as follows:

Delete the second paragraph of Subsection (c) and substitute the following:

Use a self-propelled finishing machine capable of forward and reverse movement under positive control. Provide finishing machine capable of consolidating the concrete by vibration and of raising screeds to clear the concrete for traveling in reverse. Provide either a rotating roller-type or an oscillating screed-type finishing machine.

A roller screed may be used to consolidate the overlay concrete instead of a self-propelled finishing machine. When using a roller screed, provide continuous supporting rails so there is not visible detection under the weight of the roller, provide anchorage for the supporting rails to ensure the horizontal and vertical stability of the rails, and use handheld vibrators to assist with concrete consolidation.

Add the following to the end of this Subsection:

Submit a concrete overlay pour procedure for approval by the CO for the West Viaduct and the East Viaduct. Include details on concrete placement equipment, rate of placement, sequencing, procedures, location and details of all planned construction joints, details of an emergency construction joints in the event of an unplanned interruption in the concrete pour, and method of finishing and curing.

finish for patches on the north columns and the north face of the north longitudinal beam. Provide a Class 1 finish for all other new concrete patches and concrete, excluding the concrete overlay.
