F-80 DIVISION 600

Project: WY NPS YELL 10(22), Canyon to Tower Phase 3

Do not lay masonry when the ambient temperature of outside air or material temperature is below 40 °F (4 °C). Protect work from cold and frost and insure that mortar will harden without freezing. Remove and replace any work damaged by cold weather.

Lay stones with the longest face horizontal and the exposed face parallel to the masonry face. Place and/or reset all stone masonry in a random pattern, cutting and setting dimension stones as required, to produce masonry structures similar to the following historic masonry structures.

(a) Stone masonry headwalls. The CO will identify 2 or 3 headwalls along the Canyon to Tower segment of the Grand Loop Road as headwalls to mimic during construction.

(b) Type 2 paved waterways (mortared rubble). The CO will identify 2 or 3 waterways along the Canyon to Tower segment of the Grand Loop Road as waterways to mimic during construction.

(c) Stone masonry wall facing. The CO will identify 2 or 3 wall faces along the Canyon to Tower segment of the Grand Loop Road as wall faces to mimic during wall repairs.

Duplicate beds and joints to original widths to the extent practical. Provide a bed for each course, of uniform thickness throughout. Provide a ¾-inch (19 millimeters) to 2-inch (50 millimeters) thick bed and joint for face stones, when constructing stone masonry structures, unless otherwise specified.

Construct ring stone joints on the faces and soffits between ¼ inch (6 millimeters) and 1½ inches (38 millimeters) thick, but make the bed of each course of a uniform thickness throughout.

Construct head joints vertically in dimensioned masonry. Construct head joints in other masonry classes at angles with the vertical from 0 to 45 degrees.

Complete all shaping and dressing of stones before setting. Do not dress or perform heavy hammering after the stone has been placed.

Provide suitable equipment for setting stones larger than those that can be handled by one or two workers. The rolling or turning of stones causing marking or scaring will not be permitted.

When work is not being performed, protect stone faces from staining by covering the faces with non-staining waterproof coverings. When work resumes, clean the top surface of stones by removing all mortar and thoroughly dampening the surfaces. Where new mortar butts against mortar that has partially or totally set, remove loose mortar and dampen surfaces to form the construction joint.

Measurement
