About this file

This is a Military Detail Specification (MIL-DTL-15562G) for matting or sheet floor coverings designed for electrical insulation and personnel protection in high-voltage applications not exceeding 3,000 volts. The specification, approved for use by the Department of the Navy and all Department of Defense agencies, covers three types of floor coverings: Type I (sheet with smooth surface), Type II (runner mat with smooth surface), and Type III (runner mat with raised diamond pattern surface).

Material and construction requirements specify that the floor covering shall be manufactured from synthetic rubber, reclaimed rubber, polyvinyl chloride, or copolymers thereof, with reclaimed rubber used to the maximum extent possible and all materials free of asbestos. Type I and II materials require minimum thickness of 0.125 inches, while Type III requires minimum 0.187 inches overall thickness. Standard roll lengths are 25 yards with tolerance of ±3.0 yards; Type I sheeting is available in 36- and 72-inch widths, while Types II and III matting are available in 36-inch width. Performance requirements include tensile strength of not less than 800 pounds per square inch in the as-received condition, with retention of at least 70 percent after sulfuric acid immersion and 80 percent after oxygen bomb aging. Additional requirements cover ultimate elongation (75 percent minimum for Type I; 100 percent for Types II and III), permanent set not exceeding 25 percent, Shore A durometer hardness ratings (95±5 for Type I; 75 minimum for Type II; 65 minimum for Type III), abrasion resistance limits, dielectric strength minimum of 30,000 volts, and fire resistance conformance to MIL-STD-1623. Inspection procedures include first article inspection and conformance inspection utilizing sampling plans based on lot size, with detailed test methods referenced to ASTM standards and Federal specifications. The material must be permanently marked on the backside with manufacturer identification, specification number, and manufacture date, repeated at least every six feet.
