About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document (Round 2) for Request for Quote #446572 for a Liquid He Dewar and Sub-Cooler, dated February 7, 2025, issued by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA)/Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The Q&A clarifies technical specifications regarding temperature sensors, heaters, valves, and vacuum components. Key details include: BSA will provide sensors and heaters to be installed inside the Dewar by the Contractor; the cooldown return valve must be vacuum jacketed; all valves except the purge valve must be bellow sealed; BSA will provide vacuum gauges while the Contractor must provide relief valve, isolation valve, and conflate connections; and reinforcing pads for stress management must meet compliance requirements. The document includes a portion of a P&ID drawing with a note that an updated complete drawing will be provided in a future amendment.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
REQUEST FOR QUOTE NUMBER 446572
LIQUID HE DEWAR AND SUB-COOLER
ROUND 2
FEBRUARY 7, 2025
# QUESTIONS ANSWERS
1 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 1.3.b: In this case then, the over temperature sensors will be integral to the heaters and not discrete components added on, correct? And the heaters will be configured with a junction box which interfaces with a 1” O.D.
vacuum coupling?
Sensors and heaters will be provided separately by BSA to be installed inside the Dewar by the Contractor. Heaters are typically configured with a junction box which interfaces with a 1” O.D.
but feedthrough for 16 conductor (4 per sensor) off dewar neck (Helium Space) must be accommodated.
2 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 3.2.11: So the cooldown return valve is not vacuum jacketed then?
It must be Vacuum Jacketed valve.
3 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 3.2 Vacuum Ports:
Acknowledged but helium diffusion from where, atmospheric?
Yes, atmospheric during leak testing when we spray helium outside of the vacuum boundary.
4 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 4.5: Is the mention of the conflat flange referring to the vacuum sensors port (3.14.6)? Incidentally, the P&ID seems to show the isolation valve outside of the dewar scope but I think that is not intended to be the case.
That is correct. BSA will provide Vacuum Gauges.
Contractor shall provide the relief valve, isolation valve, and conflate connections for the gauges to be installed.
See corrected portion of the
P&ID here. An updated P&ID drawing will be sent shortly as an amendment for these changes.
5 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 4.8.2: I was mostly referring to the instrumentation isolation valves here, so all of those have to be bellows sealed?
Sorry for the repetition.
Yes, all valves need to be bellow sealed except the purge valve as mentioned in specifications.
6 SPEC-CAD-1365 Paragraph 4.10: Reinforcing pads are already part of the consideration. The highest stress levels occur in the head adjacent to the pad, thus the head itself must be made thicker to achieve compliance. I do not wish to add cost casually.
Understood, please adhere to compliance requirements.
