PART II: MATERIALS
17. STONE
17.1. Armor Stone. All rock used as armor stone shall be clean, durable stone that will not disintegrate under the elements and will not break during handling. Armor stone shall be hard, close-grained rock, free of cracks, seams or other imperfections which might adversely affect its durability when exposed to weathering and the action of the sea. The minimum specific gravity of the armor stone shall be 2.65. Quarry certification of the armor stone's specific gravity is required.
17.2. Shape. All armor stone shall be roughly angular in shape, with the least dimension of any stone not being less than one-third of that stone’s greatest dimension. Flat armor stones will not be accepted.
17.3. Size. The gradation of the armor stone sizes (average nominal diameter) for the rock structures shall be as follows:
Median Size = 2.50 feet average nominal diameter Maximum Size = 3.00 feet average nominal diameter Minimum size = 2.00 feet average nominal diameter
17.4. At least 50 percent of the material shall be comprised of armor stones with an average nominal diameter between 2.50 and 3.00 feet. Armor stone with an average nominal diameter of less than 2 feet will be rejected. For the purposes of this specification, stone diameter (size) is defined as the averaged value of the stone's average dimension (average nominal diameter) measured in each of three perpendicular axes.
17.5. Armor stone shall be segregated into piles separate from chinking stone for inspection by the ENGINEER prior to placement. The CONTRACTOR shall set aside and place the largest armor stones delivered to the site on the seaward face or interior of the shore parallel section of each breakwater structure.
17.6. The ENGINEER reserves the right to instruct the CONTRACTOR to perform random drop tests on armor stone. For comparability, the test stone(s) should be dropped from a bucket, grapple, or cherry picker, or by other means from a height half the average diameter of the stone onto a rigid surface or second stone of comparable size. Dumping with other stones from a haul truck does not constitute a satisfactory test.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TR-19
17.6.1. The stone should be examined carefully before testing as well as afterward.
Failure criteria are breakage, development of new cracks, opening of old cracks, and loss of small pieces from the surface.
17.6.2. The stone shall be clean and free of dirt prior to delivery and installation at the project site.
17.7. The TOWN and ENGINEER reserve the right to refuse payment for armor stone delivered to the site any time prior to final acceptance which do not meet these Specifications. The CONTRACTOR shall remove unacceptable stone from the work site at no additional expense to the TOWN. Unacceptable stone removed from the site shall be returned to the quarry, the CONTRACTOR's yard, or otherwise disposed of at a permitted location. Armor stone which do not meet these Specifications may be used for chinking stone if the unacceptable armor stone meets the quality and size requirements for chinking stone.
17.8. Chinking Stone. All rock used as chinking stone shall be clean, durable stone that will not disintegrate under the elements and will not break during handling nor under the load of armor stone overlayers. Chinking stone shall be hard, close-grained rock, free of cracks, seams or other imperfections which might adversely affect its durability when exposed to weathering and the action of the sea. The minimum specific gravity of the chinking stone shall be 2.65. Quarry certification of the chinking stone's specific gravity will be required. All chinking stone shall be obtained from the same quarry as the armor stone.
17.9. All chinking stone shall be provided in random sizes varying between 10 and 15 inches
(average nominal diameter) and be roughly angular in shape. No chinking stone less than 10 inches in average nominal diameter will be allowed at the project site or placed within the structures discussed herein. Flat chinking stones will not be accepted.
17.10. The TOWN and ENGINEER reserve the right to refuse payment for chinking stone delivered to the site any time prior to final acceptance which do not meet these Specifications. The CONTRACTOR shall remove all unacceptable chinking stone including quarry run from the work site at no additional expense to the TOWN.
Unacceptable stone removed from the site shall be returned to the quarry, the CONTRACTOR's yard, or otherwise disposed of at a permitted location acceptable to the ENGINEER at the CONTRACTOR’s expense.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TR-21
deterioration in the mattresses. The inclusion of objectionable quantities of dirt, sand, clay, and rock fines shall not be permitted.
19.2. Gradation. Stone for filling marine mattresses shall be a well-graded mixture with the following gradation:
Sieve Size (inches) Percent Passing (by Weight) 4 100
3-1/2 90-100 2-1/2 25-60 1-1/2 0
This stone specification is generally equivalent to AASHTO M43, No 1 Coarse Aggregate, except with zero percent passing the 1-1/2 inch sieve.
20. GEOGRID/FABRIC COMPOSITE UNDERLAYMENT. The composite geogrid/filter fabric composite underlayment required for the structures shall be GC654050 produced by Tensar International Corporation, Alpharetta, GA, or equivalent as approved by Engineer (such as the BaseLok Grid Composite system by Industrial Fabrics, Inc., Baton Rouge, LA).
21. BACKFILL MATERIAL. The backfill material to be placed over excavated portions of the completed rock structure shall be clean sand excavated from the existing, restored beach. The sand shall free of debris, gravel, rocks, clay balls, peat or other organics, oil, pollutants and any other non-beach-compatible materials. Any fill material determined by the ENGINEER or the TOWN to be in non-compliance with these specifications, or otherwise non-beach compatible, shall be promptly removed by the CONTRACTOR at no expense to the TOWN.
Burial of such material within the beach/berm during backfilling is specifically and strictly prohibited. The backfill shall be shaped to approximately the elevations and grades that existed prior to installation of the structures. Backfilling shall not occur until verification by survey performed by the CONTRACTOR and concurrence by the ENGINEER. Any portion of the structure backfilled prior to acceptance by the ENGINEER shall be ineligible for payment.
22. SAFETY FENCE. Materials shall be as specified by the TOWN which are generally orange plastic mesh, at least 48 inches high, measured from grade, mounted on steel or wooden posts.
23. SIGNAGE. Materials for the required sign are detailed in the Drawings.
