About this file

This document is a course scope of work for Physics 3200, a high school-level science course developed by the Nevada state education system. The course is designed as a one-year curriculum that integrates scientific and engineering practices with core physics concepts including Forces and Interactions, Energy, Waves and Electromagnetic Radiation, and Engineering Design. The course fulfills high school science credit requirements, qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance, and may count toward College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma. Demonstrations and mandatory lab experiences with proper safety techniques are integral components, as is the incorporation of diversity awareness and culturally responsive instruction. The curriculum was originally approved in November 1984 and has undergone revisions in 1987, 1994, 2000, May 2008, November 2011, November 2014, and most recently in April 2021.

The course establishes eight primary goals aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), focusing on student competencies in analyzing data and mathematical representations of object interactions, designing collision-mitigation devices, explaining gravitational and electromagnetic forces, modeling energy storage and conservation, applying engineering design to energy conversion, demonstrating wave properties, evaluating electromagnetic radiation, and exploring current and future applications of wave technology. The document specifies the course code as CID-SCI-SG-3200 and SCED 03151. The related state and local contract opportunity referenced is a Physics and Honors Physics Textbook Adoption for Nevada, indicating that vendors may be solicited to provide instructional materials aligned with this scope of work.

PHYSICS – 3200

Course Scope:

This one-year course is designed to integrate scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas related to physics. The topics covered in Physics include Forces and Interactions; Energy; Waves and Electromagnetic Radiation; and Engineering Design. Demonstrations and lab experiences that employ proper safety techniques are mandatory for this course. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the science credits required for high school graduation and qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance. This course may count towards the College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma.

Course Goals:

1. To analyze data and use mathematical representations to explain interactions between objects and a system of objects. [HS-PS2-1, HS-PS2-2, HS-PS2-4]

2. To design, evaluate, and refine a device that minimizes the force on an object during a collision. [HS-PS2-3, HS-ETS1-1, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3, HS-ETS1-4]

3. To quantitatively and conceptually explain the effects that gravitational, electrostatic, and magnetic forces have on interacting objects. [HS-PS2-4, HS-PS2-5, HS-PS3-5]

4. To use models and mathematical reasoning to illustrate the storage, flow, and conservation of energy within a system at the atomic and macroscopic scales.

[HS-PS3-1, HS-PS3-2, HS-PS3-4]

5. To apply the design process to engineer a device that converts energy from one form to another. [HS-PS3-3, HS-ETS1-1, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3, HS-ETS1-4]

6. To use mathematical representations to demonstrate an understanding of the properties of waves. [HS-PS4-1]

7. To evaluate the evidence supporting the dual nature of electromagnetic radiation and its effects on matter. [HS-PS4-3, HS-PS4-4]

8. To evaluate the information on current applications of waves and explore future applications of waves for technologies, including the transmission and storage of information and energy. [HS-PS4-2, HS-PS4-5, HS-ETS1-3]

Approved Nov 1984, revised 1987, 1994, 2000, May 2008, November 2011, November 2014, revised April 2021.
