About this file

This document contains questions and responses related to a federal contract opportunity to provide cemetery improvements at Fort Lawton National Cemetery. The project involves installing new chain link fencing around the perimeter of the cemetery, with work to include clearing vegetation as needed, installing new posts and fencing in a wooded area, and ensuring the fencing follows the slope of varying terrain. Additional scope involves constructing a new masonry and granite sign wall and columns at the cemetery entrance, with all vertical surfaces to be faced with tan-colored granite. The project also requires installing a new flagpole and making improvements to an existing masonry gate entrance, connecting it to a retaining wall with additional chain link fencing. The response provides specifications for the cast rock veneer and gate opener. While some work could be delayed due to weather, extended delays are not permitted. The opportunity is issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration for cemetery improvements at location 951-MM-FY23-002.

1. What is the stone veneer? The existing is a mix of basalt and cut river boulders? The spec cites brick, but no further info is provided. Please schedule to the type of brick scheduled for this project. See attached Specification for the required stone.

1. Is the level of the chain-link fence supposed to remain consistent or is it supposed to follow the slope of the terrain, changing in elevation down in the wooded area? Follow slope.

1. There is some lack of clarity in the drawings. The solid black line labeled NEW CHAIN LINK FENCE is not a chain-link link fence line but is an arrow/indicator line pointing at the dotted line? Our current reading of the drawings is that there is no chain-link scheduled to be installed along the solid line. There is new chain-link fence scheduled to be installed along the dotted line. This fence will tie into an existing fence on the south side of the site (bottom of page of site plan). This new fence will not tie into anything on the north side of the site (top of page of site plan). Please confirm this is an accurate interpretation of the drawings. The long-dashed line denotes the line of the new fence.

1. Given that the scheduled fence runs through a wooded area, how much clearing will be required. Does the Cemetery prefer that a wide channel be cleared along the path of the fence line, or should we attempt to preserve as much of the existing vegetation as possible, only removing that which is necessary to install posts and chain-link. Only clear vegetation necessary to install fencing.

1. With this project being awarded in late summer/early fall and the flagpole taking 6-10 weeks, could the flagpole area scope be pushed till the spring as the rain will make digging a 7’ deep hole extremely difficult do the Pacific Northwest’s weather? No, weather delays are allowed but the project cannot be delayed for an extended period. This work could be scheduled for early in the job to eliminate this concern.

Is the edge of the first column of the masonry gate entrance supposed to connect to the existing retaining wall (see pic)? Fill this space with chain link

1. Page 4 of the drawings shows only one side of the masonry/granite sign wall and 2 sides of the columns. Is masonry supposed to cover all four sides of all four columns? Is the back of the masonry wall/granite panel covered in brick veneer as well? All vertical surfaces will be faced with the stone.

1. Is the Granite sign panel mounted to the cast-in-place concrete? Refer to detail 2/4. Detail shows letters being applies to stone with studs welded to letters and epoxied.

1. Plan Sheet 5 details the gate opener and says SEE SPEC. but there is no mention of the gate opener in the spec book provided. There is no decorative/Ornamental fence spec section either. Please supply more information about the gate opener and ornamental gate. See attached specification.

1. Page 4 of the plans describes the granite panel mounted to the masonry wall. However, there is no depth dimension for the plan. Can the VA please advise as to the exact depth of the granite panel. The width of the stone is 4”. The granite panel is 3” width.

1. There is no color specification for the granite panel. Our supplier would like the quote grey granite. Can the VA please advise as to the color preference of the granite panel. Tan

1. Refer to attached documents for the specifications on the cast rock veneer, gate opener.
