About this file

This is a Geotechnical Engineering Report prepared by Terracon Consultants for a proposed Veterans Administration Hospital parking structure located at 2121 North Avenue in Grand Junction, Colorado. The report documents subsurface exploration and geotechnical recommendations based on 16 test borings performed to depths of 6 to 45.5 feet. Key findings include soft to medium stiff sandy silty clay soils with volume change potential, groundwater encountered at 8-9 feet below ground surface, and challenging soil conditions that require specialized foundation design.

The report recommends using driven pile foundations (10-inch steel pipe or H-piles) to a depth of 45-55 feet to mitigate settlement risks, with a low volume change zone beneath floor slabs and careful subgrade preparation. The site is classified as seismic site class C, and the soils exhibit high plasticity with significant potential for shrinking and swelling. Terracon suggests close monitoring during construction, complete removal of existing fill, and implementation of a contingency budget for subgrade stabilization to ensure successful project implementation.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This geotechnical engineering report has been prepared for the proposed Veterans Administration Hospital parking structure to be located at 2121 North Avenue, Grand Junction, Colorado. Sixteen

(16) borings, designated TH-1 through TH-16, were performed to depths of approximately 6 to 45.5 feet below the existing ground surface within the proposed pavement and structure areas. Logs of the borings along with a site location map and boring location plan are included in Appendix A of this report.

The purpose of these services is to provide information and geotechnical engineering recommendations relative to:

subsurface soil conditions foundation design and construction groundwater conditions floor slab design and construction earthwork lateral earth pressures IBC seismic site Classification pavement recommendations
