About this file
This document is a Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) Complaint/Spill Report Form for the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility in Reno, Nevada. The report details the discovery of an abandoned boiler heating tank from the late 1970s during an unrelated construction project in December 2023. Soil samples taken on 1/22/2024 confirmed contamination with Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-Diesel and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-Oil, with concentrations of 1147 mg/Kg and 620 mg/Kg respectively. The contamination was first suspected due to a volatile organic compound (VOC) odor during initial digging.
The report indicates that the Reno VA Hospital has proactively responded by contacting CEM Caitlin Jelle from UES (formerly McGinley & Associates) on 2/5/2024 and scheduling a site walk for the following day to discuss plans for a site assessment. The spill is located at the laundry loading dock in Building 1 of the facility, and the quantity of contamination remains unknown. The reporting person is Travis Robinett from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, who submitted the report through an online system with the NDEP tracking number 240205-01.
