About this file
This is a technical specification document for Convection Heating and Cooling Units (Section 23 82 00), specifically focusing on finned-tube radiation units for HVAC systems. The document details product requirements for radiation units with two primary heating element configurations: hydronic and electric. Hydronic heating elements consist of steel pipe or nonferrous tubing with mechanically bonded fins, designed for silent horizontal expansion and contraction. Electric heating elements are Cal-rod resistance type units installed inside aluminum tubes, with automatic thermal cutout protection and UL approval.
The specification includes detailed requirements for enclosures, which must be 1.6 mm steel with a sloping top, designed for wall mounting and finished in baked enamel. Installation guidelines mandate rigorous support to prevent distortion, with cross-bracing as needed. Additional requirements include installing fiberglass blanket insulation with a minimum R-value of 8 above hydronic radiant panels. The document also specifies that a manufacturer's technical representative must provide 4 hours of training to VA personnel on system operation and maintenance, and that all units must be tested to prove compliance with design specifications.
