Requestion for Information Correct Atrium Fire Protection

Project # 558-21-106: Durham VAMC

Question: Please confirm that the roof replacement portion of this project is the only portion that will need to be completed on weekends, as stated on S-102. If so, please also confirm that all other work can be completed during normal working hours.

Answer: Negative. The interior window replacement, installation of HVAC ducting down the walls, electrical conduit install on the walls, steel reinforcing of the roof trusses will all have to be on off-hours for the dining area.

Per the Scope of Work:

“The contractor will have to coordinate the installation schedule with Durham VA, it is anticipated that all roof replacement will have to be done on weekends…. Shutting down of the entire dining area during normal weekday hours for construction will not be allowed.”

Question: Note 9 on A-201 states: “Limited hour access to first floor courtyard. Coordinate working hours with COR prior to bidding”. What are the available working hours for this courtyard?

Answer: From the Scope of Work:

“Any dust creating activity from the work that will impact the dining area of the canteen (the ground floor area outside the service line area) will have to be done when dining area is closed.

This means after 400pm Monday thru Friday, or weekends. That will be at least: activities where drilling thru the bricks occur (electrical conduit, duct work, etc.), roofing activities (cutting holes thru the roof), steel reinforcing activities, storefront/window replacement, setting of equipment on roof (by any means), or other demolition inside the atrium.”

Question: Would it be possible to consolidate the regular usage of the dining area for either phasing work or storage of materials, and otherwise keep it open for VA use during normal hours, for any portion of this project?

Answer: The VA is open for storing a limited amount/number of items (approximately 12’x12’) in the atrium during non-work, but understand it can’t be isolated by a fence, only construction tape. The VA cannot guarantee the security of any items left in the room. It would have to be secured so nothing accidently tips over on a patron that sits too close at a table, or any other accident while the contractor is not present.

Any dust creating activities cannot occur when the diners are using the area. Non-dust creating activities (i.e., pulling wiring, programing, testing) can be coordinated with COR.

Question: Will there be a space in or near the dining area that can be used for storage or will tools and materials need to be completely removed from the building after every work shift?

Answer: There are no storage rooms available inside the building. The VA will work with the contractor to locate a space for a CONNEX box outside the building as close as possible to the closest entrance. A smaller CONNEX box has a higher likelihood of behind located closer to the building, a larger CONNEX box will have to be located further away.
