Questions and Answers part II If drawings can be provided to show if these locations have just a fire or a fire/smoke rating correct damper installation can be determined by the VA Staff. If not we recommend hiring a P.E. stamped Engineer to investigate these two (2) areas to ensure the correct dampers are being installed. If fire dampers instead of fire/smoke dampers listed in the SOW can be installed in these areas, the savings in the material cost and installation will offset the cost of the engineer.
VA Response: we appreciate the vendor highlighting these areas and asking for clarifications. We have since researched existing facility documents and consulted w/ VA Safety and HVAC POCs to inform the following responses.
Generator room – All might not require stainless steel dampers. Original damper Access ID # 1545 was stainless steel duct and will require a stainless steel damper; VA Response: Concur
Missing 6 is the smaller stainless steel and will require stainless steel dampers; VA Response: Concur
Missing 7 is a galvanized duct and should require a normal galvanized damper; VA Response: Concur. No issue providing Galvanized to Match
Missing 8 is a stainless steel and will require stainless steel dampers; VA Response: Concur
Generator room – Most mechanical spaces have fire barrier walls not fire/smoke. These 4 locations may only require fire dampers (not fire/smoke) which would be a significant savings in material cost and labor, and save the cost of Johnson Controls tying these points into the fire system in an area that might be questionable. (No fire system representative at last night’s walk-thru). Recommend having a P.E. stamped Engineer approve the correct dampers to be installed.
VA Response: We have since researched existing facility documents and consulted w/ VA Safety and HVAC POCs to inform the following responses.
1. The Dampers requested at the ‘West’ Wall of AA114 Mechanical Room shared w/ adjacent Generator Room shall be combination Fire/Smoke Dampers as requested (Items 1545 and (2) ‘Missing Dampers’ 006 & 007 adjacent).
1. The Damper requested at the ‘East’ Wall of AA114 Mechanical Room shared w/ adjacent Rated Corridor shall be a Fire Damper ( ‘Missing Dampers’ 008), consistent w/ adjacent/existing dampers and Life-Safety Drawings.
Generator room – There were two (2) additional ducts (not on this solicitation) penetrating the same wall a supply and a return. The supply had a duct access which we assume had a fire damper inside. The return did not have an access. We recommend investigating these two (2) ducts to confirm if they have dampers installed. If they do, this may shed light on the above question what type of damper to install in this area, FD or FSD.
VA Response: As noted for ‘Missing Damper 008’ above, facility documents designate these existing locations as ‘FIRE DAMPERS’, which informed our feedback.
8th floor – Original damper investigated was Assess # 1305 - GOOD; VA Response: No Response Reqd
Missing 004/005 are the supply/return going down the hall and will need FSD installed – GOOD; VA Response: No Response Reqd
