About this file

This document is a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Suicide Risk Identification Strategy Staff Specific Guidance, detailing which healthcare personnel can administer the Columbia - Suicide Severity Rating Scale Screener (C-SSRS Screener) and Comprehensive Suicide Risk Evaluation (CSRE). The guidance provides a detailed matrix specifying which medical professionals are authorized to complete each type of suicide risk assessment, with variations based on professional licensure and role. For example, Medical Doctors, Licensed Psychologists, and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses can complete both the screener and comprehensive evaluation, while some roles like Licensed Practical Nurses, Peer Specialists, and Respiratory Therapists are only authorized to complete the initial screener. The document includes footnotes clarifying supervision requirements, training needs, and specific exceptions for certain professional categories.
