About this file

This document is Addendum #2 for Materials Testing & Inspection Services for the Big Sky Fire Department's Fire Station No. 3 project located in Big Sky, Montana, prepared by NV5, Inc. The addendum contains a series of questions and answers addressing technical aspects of the materials testing and inspection services for the project, including clarifications on construction schedules, seismic requirements, slab moisture testing, and mortar/grout testing specifications. The document provides detailed responses to five specific questions raised by potential testing and inspection service providers.

Key technical details from the addendum include confirmation that the structure is designed as a Risk Category IV (Essential Facility) in a seismic category D zone, with seismic requirements extensively documented in the project manual. The project involves testing for various construction materials, with specific guidance provided on acceptable testing methods such as relative humidity or vapor emission for slab moisture, and ASTM C780 standards for mortar and grout testing. The project does not include masonry retaining walls, but does feature a boulder retaining wall on the northeast side of the site, and testing will be required in accordance with the project specifications.

Big Sky Fire Department | Fire Station No. 3 ADDENDUM #2: Q&A | Materials Testing & Inspection Services March 19 | 2025

Q1: Is there a preliminary construction schedule available from the contractor? It helps determine their anticipated pour schedules, rebar, earthwork duration, etc.

Answer: Please refer to the attached construction schedule.

Q2: Can you please clarify what is meant by "Masonry Accessory Installation Inspection"? And can you direct us to where there are Masonry Retaining Walls? That is noted in the scope, but we do not see any CMU retaining walls in the plans.

Answer: Masonry Accessory Installation Inspection is not in the specifications. There are no Masonry Retaining walls. Only cast in place concrete. A boulder retaining wall is located along the NE side of the site per the documents.

Q3: Was this building designed for seismic resistance? We only see specific seismic details in the plumbing plans.

Answer: Yes, seismic is required for mech. Bidders should review the project manual too. We have 230550 seismic requirements for equipment and supports (attached), and the term Seismic appears almost 150 times in Div 23 alone.

This structure is designed for the seismic loads required of a Risk Category IV (Essential Facility) in a seismic category D zone, as indicated on S-001 of our drawing set.

Q4: What type of slab moisture testing is required? Relative Humidity or Vapor Emission?

Answer: Either test is acceptable. Slab moisture testing is a requirement by the flooring and floor warranty products - structurally, we do not require a moisture test for slabs on grade. Perform testing as required per flooring manufacturers.

Q5: For the scope item "Portland cement-lime mortars and grout testing”, does that just include grout and mortar testing for masonry? Is there any testing needed related to the stone veneer installation?

Answer: ASTM C780 - Standard Test Method for Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation of Mortars for Plain and Reinforced Unit Masonry. No testing related to stone veneer installation. Follow Section 044313.13 Section 2.02 Mortar and Grout Materials specification.
