1.2 Project Description & Objectives

Fire Station No. 3 will be located between South Fork Road and Inspiration Peak Road in Big Sky, Montana, less than a mile from the Montage Big Sky Resort and the Yellowstone Club.

The Project will consist of construction of a new 10,273 SF Fire Station No.3. This two-story structure that will be comprised of three double-loaded, drive-through bays, three sleeping quarters, three three-quarter bathrooms, two toilet rooms, study, offices, kitchen, dining, dayroom, fitness room, and decontamination area. Fire mitigation strategies played a major role in selecting the building materials and systems, and in the design of the landscape. Stone, heavy timber, fire treated wood, and standing seam metal roofing have been selected for their fire resistance and material longevity.

Mechanical and ventilation systems were designed to resist fire and ember intrusion.

The landscape design uses native fire resistive plantings and follows the recommended setbacks within the Wildland Urban Interface code; and will create an attractive example of fire wise landscaping.

The station will address current and future needs of the Big Sky Fire Department, providing emergency response to Spanish Peaks and the surrounding areas. The design takes a holistic approach, focusing on efficiency, resiliency, function, budget, aesthetics and firefighter health and wellbeing. By employing enduring materials and building techniques, the station is designed for a 75+year life expectancy and will be an asset to the community and lead by example in an area with wildfire risks.
