SECTION C – SPECIFICATIONS/DRAWINGS

C.0 NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

The National Park Service (NPS) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) that has been entrusted with the care of our national parks since 1916. The National Park System currently has 433 units (often referred to as parks), covering more than 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories.

The NPS also has more than 150 related areas that are linked in importance and purpose to places managed directly by the National Park Service by preserving important segments of the nation's natural and cultural heritage. They are designated by acts of Congress or by the Secretary of the Interior (affiliated areas). The majority of related areas are not units of the National Park Service and are managed by other government agencies or non-government organizations and landowners. The National Park Service is involved in related areas by directly managing the entire or sections of a related area, or by providing technical or financial assistance.

The NPS preserves unimpaired natural and cultural resources, and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

C.1 ALLEGHENY PORTAGE RAILROAD NATIONAL HISTORICAL SITE (ALPO)

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site (ALPO) is an NPS site that covers approximately 1,249 acres and is located in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 12 miles west of Altoona, PA. ALPO preserves the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains, the Allegheny Portage Railroad, which was the final piece of the Pennsylvania Main

Line Canel that opened in 1834.

The Allegheny Portage Railroad opened the first direct route between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA. When it was completed, the Allegheny Portage Railroad scaled 1,400-foot of evaluation through the Allegheny Mountains, and include four (4) massive stone viaducts, over 72 stone culverts, the first railroad tunnel in the country, 10 inclined planes, 10 stationary steam powered engine houses and 36.65 miles of railway.

At ALPO you can visit the remains of Engine House No.6 and the Skew Arch Bridge. You can also visit the Lemon

House, acquired by the NPS in 1966. Built by Samuel Lemon in the early 1830’s as a family home, The Lemons also operated a tavern for the travelers on the newly built “Allegheny Portage Railroad” and the “Northern Turnpike” on the first floor. Lastly you visit the Staple Bend Tunnel, which became part of the NPS in 2001, the 1st railroad tunnel built in the US, and the 3rd tunnel of any kind built in the US, the first tunnels were for other canals in PA.

For more information, please visits ALPO’s website at: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site (U.S. National

Park Service)
