Specifications for Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH)

Specifications for subtitle (SDH) scripts:

1. Captions shall follow the guidance detailed in the “Captioning Key” maintained by the Described and Captioned Media Program, unless otherwise specified below. https://dcmp.org/learn/captioningkey

2. Each subtitle shall appear on a single line with a maximum of forty-two characters per line. (This is counter to the Captioning Key, which allows two lines.)

3. Attention should be given to appropriate line breaks, using commas, periods, or natural breaks in the sentence. See the Captioning Key for additional guidance.

4. For grammar guidance, refer to the HFC Editorial Style Guide. https://www.nps.gov/subjects/hfc/hfc-editorial-style-guide.htm

5. Captions shall be verbatim, not edited.

6. Captions shall not include italics.

7. There shall be no blank frames between subtitles unless there is a full break between dialogue/narration.

8. Speaker names and narrator shall be all caps. Based on the specific show, speaker names may be used before they are introduced.

9. Subtitles shall describe music (a music symbol is not sufficient) and sound effects. See the Captioning Key for more details.

10. For shows that do not have standard aspect ratios (such as vertical exhibit videos or shows wider than 16:9), formatting specifications such as the number of lines and character count may be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

11. Caption scripts shall start with a 00: timecode (for example: 00:00:01,543 --> 00:00:09,551 [crickets chirping]) Specifications for on-screen SDH appearance:

1. On-screen SDH (Open Captions) shall be placed at the bottom of the screen in a black band at the bottom of picture.

2. Band shall be 90% or 100% opacity, 70 pixels (HD), 140 pixels (UHD), or 6.5% percent of the screen height.

3. Font shall be Frutiger Regular or Arial Regular. Different fonts may be needed for Indigenous languages; in those cases defer to NPS guidance.

4. Font size shall be 40 pixels (HD), or 80 pixels (UHD). Font color shall be white or almost white.

5. Text shall be center justified.

6. Subtitles shall be pop-on/pop-off, not rolling.

7. For shows that do not have standard aspect ratios (such as vertical exhibit videos or shows wider than 16:9), formatting specifications such as the band opacity and size, font size, and line placement may be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

Examples:

Frutiger Regular, 90% opacity black bar.

Frutiger Regular, 100% opacity black bar.
