A. Project Location: Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Washington DC and
Montgomery County Maryland. Project is located in several areas along the towpath extending from
Lock 1 at Rock Creek in the District to Lock 5 in Maryland.
B. The Work consists of:
1. Repairs to historical canal lock masonry and stone masonry retaining walls that involves masonry repairs, takedown and rebuild, and stabilizations.
2. At Lock 1 and 2, the work consists of removing sediment in the lock, foundation repairs, grouting the canal walls, repairing deteriorated stones, and pointing. Cofferdams and pumps for control of water during construction will be needed as well as earthen ramps for access.
3. At the Level 1 and 2 Walls, which are identified as Bid Options, the work involves stabilizing areas of existing walls. At Level, permeation grouting will be used to reduce lateral earth pressure. At Level 2, the walls will be stabilized with chinking and pointing and fill replacement behind the walls with foam blocks. Cofferdams and pumps to control stormwater and ramps for access to the site are needed.
4. At Wisconsin Avenue, the work involves temporarily relocating historic fencing and posts, taking down part of stone walls displaced by vegetation, and rebuilding those walls.
CHOH – 245002 & 278811 01 11 00 - 2
Cofferdams and pumps to control storm water in the canal are needed. The sites will be accessed from earthen ramps installed at 33rd St.
5. At Grace St., the work involves stabilizing and repairing an existing wall by removing top cap stone, drilling and installing vertical pipes and grouting, removing existing stabilizing steel in sequences to allow installation of soil nails, applying a shotcrete facing, and constructing a stone face to match the character of the original wall. The site is accessed same as Wisconsin Avenue.
6. At Potomac St, the work involves installing temporary support of excavation and taking down and rebuilding a section of stone retaining wall. The site is accessed the same as
Wisconsin Avenue.
7. At 34th St, the work involves installing temporary support of excavation, taking down and rebuilding a section of stone retaining wall that has displaced, and restoring the plantings at the top of the wall. The site is accessed the same as Wisconsin Ave.
8. At the Lock 5 site, the work involves the following:
a. Replacement of deteriorated steel bridges over the lock (Base Bid) and the inlet channel (Bid Option) that are used for both public towpath access and emergency and maintenance vehicles. The stone masonry abutments at the inlet lock will need temporary support of excavation to work on the abutments. Cofferdams and pumps will be needed to control water during construction.
b. At Lock 5, the work in the base bid involves replacing the upstream lock gate, removing contaminated sediment in the lock and installing foundation repairs. The work in the Bid Option includes performing stone repairs and repointing. The upper part of the northeast lock radius wall will be taken down and rebuilt as bar of the base bid. There is also an existing canal water lock bypass pipe that is deteriorated and will be relined in the base bid or replaced as a Bid Option.
c. At the inlet lock, the work will consist of removing trees and vegetation covering the face of the dam structure and installing rip rap on the face that is part of the base bid. There is also minor masonry work on the southwest upstream adjacent to the inlet lock gate that is part of a Bid Option. Cofferdams and pumps in the inlet channel are needed to control water.
d. At the Guard lock, the timber gate will be replaced and the walls on the downstream side will be repaired by replacing missing stones and constructing a concrete sistering wall to limit the water flow through the existing wall. There are some trees to be removed to allow access and the construction of a cofferdam with pumps is needed.
