PART 2 - MATERIALS
2.2 STONES FOR DRY-STACKED STONE WALL
A. The material for the dry stacked stone walls shall be Sierra White Granite. Sierra What Granite is a natural granite, fine-grained (1-3mm), primarily light-gray to white in color, with gray-to-black flecking. It is typically comprised of oligoclase, quartz, orthoclase, biotite, muscovite, and other trace components. The material shall be aesthetically compatible with the native stone found at the site, in coloring, patterning, and texture. Slight natural spotting, streaking or color variations will be acceptable on the exposed faces, providing there is no structural deterioration.
B. The term “Sierra White” is a registered trademark of Coldspring, a large domestic supplier of
YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 3
natural stone product. However, it is also the traditional colloquial name for the local stone found throughout Yosemite National Park, having the qualities specified in 2.2.A. Use of the phrase “Sierra White” is not intended to imply use of a particular product from a particular supplier. The government will accept any product meeting the contract requirements that exhibit the salient features of 2.2.A.
C. Stones for wall sections are to be sound, hard, and shaped as shown on Drawings. Stones shall be dressed, either at the supplier facility or at the site, to achieve a “natural” appearance, by removing sharp edges and angles.
D. Granite may be salvaged from the project site and as available from trenching operations. Granite salvaged from trenching operations shall be shaped to sizes indicated on Drawings, and to remove sharp edges and angles.
E. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to obtain all required stone, and to load, transport and shape the stone as required to meet the requirements for the final product. All stone is subject to approval by the Contracting Officer.
F. The Contractor shall use the following quantities for the purposes of bidding and planning:
Type Quantity Average Length
Average Height
Average Depth
Average Volume
Minimum Volume
Maximum Volume
Estimated Weight
(ea) side-to-side
(inches) top-to-bottom (inches) front-to-back
(inches) (cubic feet) (cubic feet) (cubic feet) (pounds)
Four Man Blocks 200 40 30 30 20.83 18.4 24.5 2000-4000 Three Man Blocks 125 32 24 18 8.00 4.7 11.2 700-2000
Two Man Blocks 100 22 18 12 2.75 1.6 3.6 200-700
G. Each block size may vary in up to 8-inches from the average length, height, and depth required so long as the final block is within the minimum and maximum volume shown.
H. Variation in stone size in required. For each type of block (four-man, three-man, two-man), the Contractor shall have the supplier produce no less than five variations in size. A variation shall be any length or height dimension that changes by more than 2-inches.
2.3 BASE AND DRAINAGE MATERIALS
A. Aggregate base: see Section 32 11 23 – Aggregate Base.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL
A. Contractor shall work with Contracting Officer’s Representative to achieve stonework which complies with the intent of design as shown in the drawings.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Do any necessary finish grading and compaction in addition to that performed in accordance with
YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 4
earthwork to bring subgrades after final compaction to required grades and sections as indicated.
3.3 EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL
A. See Section 31 23 00.
3.4 INSTALLATION
A. Roughly shape stone with a hammer to approximate fit. Knock off weak portions. Knob corners and returns square.
B. Remove or bury all plug and feather marks (drill holes).
C. In walls, use large stones for bottom courses and large selected stones at the corners. Generally, decrease size of stone from bottom to top. Four Man Blocks shall be the foundation stone at all times that the exposed wall height exceeds 16-inches.
D. In walls lay even colored, sound, quarry seam faces to weather on face of wall. Lay face stones in random bond with maximum 2-inch-wide joints. Fit small stones into irregular spaces to give appearance of random sizes and shapes.
E. Distribute headers throughout the wall mass. Extend headers through walls that are 24 inches or less in depth and into core or backing of walls that are deeper than 24 inches.
F. Slope tops of walls to shed water.
G. Dry-laid stone is to be stable and withstand climbing without shifting or moving. Distribute stones of various colors and sizes evenly throughout the work. Select stones roughly squared and pitched to line and place evenly at ends of wall. Lay stones that are flat or stratified in approximately horizontal position, not on edge.
H. Brush free of dust or other foreign matter before placing. Place stones with largest at bottom as keys. Provide batter on back side of wall as necessary for stability. Trim and shim stones as necessary to ensure firm, stable bedding upon one another.
I. Provide sufficient number of stones to install complete walls from lines and grades shown on the drawings and details.
3.2 CLEAN UP
A. Remove any debris, waste products, and excess materials from the site.
B. Scrub completed wall with fiber brushes, using a mild alkaline abrasive cleaner that contains no caustic or harsh fillers. Begin at top and work down. Clean stone thoroughly, leaving no traces of cleaning compound.
